Another thing I learned lol. I thought Romanian was more Simmilar to Northern European Slavic languages

Gramatically Romanian is extremely close to Latin and even preserved some features all other Latin Languages lost. Lexically, like 60% of Romanian words are Latin-based and some 30% are Slavic. Then there are also weird words that seem to not be from any of these categories and which resemble Albanian or Bulgarian ones (possibily Dacian). 

So in a sense yes, in Romanian there is a lot of Slavic influence. People mixed a lot and Soviets liked to point out this Slavic heritage to extremely misleading extends. After annexing Moldova they even made it mandatory for Romanian to be written in Cyrillic, changed the name of the Language from Romanian to Moldavian, started the process of adding Slavic words from Ukrainian and Russian to replace Latin ones etc. At the other extreme some Romanians like to think we are completely Latin and 0% Slavic, which is also not right.  This is bc Romanian culture is partly founded in the fact that Romanians seen as the descendents of Rome.

Well actually I am both Moldovan and ''Romanian''. I was born in the region of Moldova that is currently part of Romania. So, I was not born in the Republic of Moldova, but I am still Moldovan. Similarly to how someone living in LA might see himself as Californian as a regional identity and American as a national identity, I see myself as Moldovan in terms of regional identity and Romanian in terms of national identity.

As the majority of Romanians, I am pro-unification and would vote YES if a referendum were to ever take place. This may be in part bias due to the fact that I am Moldovan myself, but I also do also think the cons outweight the cons. Economically, in terms of tourism and very importantly in terms of security. 

Also, as someone living in NE Romania I have more in common with someone living in the Republic of Moldova than someone living in the very far west of south of Romania proper. One time visiting Italy I met a guide that was from Republic of Moldova. So we started talking in English (I didn't know we could understand each other otherwise), but then switched to Romanian midway.  I didn't feel like we were foreigners, I felt like I met another Romanian. 90% of Romanians actually have an emotional connection with Moldova because of all this amount of historical and cultural overlap, so this proposal makes total sense in this regard.

I guess that would be like if Quebec ever left Canada (in the last referendum 49% voted to leave Canada). There would be a lot of history that might make some bonds remain

 

Then again I feel like for the first couple decades some Canadians might be pissed instead so I dunno if it's the same

I can give you a parallel that is more historically accurate (but we have to pretend Canada exists since the 10th century for this to work ). 

◾ Basically imagine Tsarist Russia occupies British Colombia in 1821.
◾ In 1919 British Colombia rejoins Canada after the Bolshevics came in power in Russia.
◾ In 1939 URSS seizes British Colombia again.
◾ Canada briefly retakes in WW2, then looses it again and British Colombia becomes a Soviet republic within the URSS.
◾ In 1991 British Colombia becomes independent.
◾ However, when it seemed like British Colombia made moves towards unification Russia invades 10% of its territory.

Quebec and Canada have a difference in Language, but Romania and Moldova are more like Canada-US, Australia-New Zeeland, Greece-Cyprus etc (neighbouring countries speaking the same Language).
