I’m confused. So are they gonna part ways with artists who refuse to make hip hop music?

Only the ones who make no money.

Gaga, for instance, has a deal with the label which I think pays them part of her touring profit.. so as long as she sells tickets she'll be on their books.

However, they're a lazy label & out of touch with the modern way of music consumption regardless, so them clinging to what's hot rightnow is no surprise.

They were the #1 label on Billboard in 2020 when Chromatica came out and Top 3 last year

Either you're referencing the leaked documents with this or you have another source. But those leaks never mentioned sharing tour revenue. Also, music is profitable for labels without touring, otherwise there simply wouldn't have been any albums released in the last 2 years.

Maybe they're telling her this because she had hip hop flavour to her music previously and worked with hip hop artists? My point is, they wouldn't have demanded hip hop of her without reason, so doubtful it's something they were telling all artists on their books (the success of Gaga's recent pop songs is proof it's not just hip hop that the people want). Still ridiculous that she was told this, though, on top of her having to waive her music rights away just to pay off debts.

I can't help but wonder if this bias would also apply to a well-established artist like Gaga, as well.

Just considering the absence of any and all backup promo for Chromatica, while brand new artists on other labels were thriving.. I hope things are okay behind the scenes, but the promo silence during Chromatica was deafening

That's just the point - she's well-established. Labels don't see any point in continuing to over-promote acts who have been around a long time. Once you've been around for a decade and have reached a certain amount of fame and success, your label barely promotes you because you should no longer need it, your fanbase alone should be enough to tide you over, you don't need public approval. And that's why Chromatica put in a decent showing, further extended with the success of these stadium shows. Brand new artists are thriving because they're being given priority because they're new, that'll die down when they've been around a while. I don't think it works the same way in the UK, though. Here, if you're popular, no matter how long you've been around and even if your music is selling itself, you'll be promoted everywhere. It means local artists can become really insufferable, at least to me. But in America, it seems once you've risen to a certain level, you just disappear from a promo point of view and the limelight is always on the new ones.

Even during ARTPOP, they wanted ballads and ballads and ballads because of Adele. Hence why she wrote Dope.

And DURING ARTPOP. They were  putting up road blocks the whole time. People speculate that's why she scrapped the original ARTPOP and started again. Also apparently they kept saying 'we just want a ballad from you, ballads are really in right now' which is why she wrote Dope as a F you to them stating "you want a ballad. I'll give you a real f.uckin ballad"

This is a confirmed myth. Dope was written because Lady Gaga wanted it to be that way, not because Interscope was trying to force it. I don't think they would have wanted her to change from I Wanna Be With You to Dope either.

What a ridiculous statement. Artists make music because they want to, but it also gives them something to promote. How does an artist go on tour with no album to promote?

Ofcourse they would release music without it making money. It’s called a loss leader.

You’re also forgetting people don’t buy albums anymore, they stream them. There’s no money in streaming. Releasing albums alone is not a huge revenue earner, and it possibly never was.

This is why labels are obsessed with 360 deals so they can send artists out on tour, sell merch and pimp them out for product endorsements. They need as many revenue streams as possible because albums alone aren’t enough.

Exactly. Isn't her biggest hit that song with Eminem?

True.

I'm curious as to the lack of visuals and general album rollout. For example, Joanne (surprisingly) had a ton of promo, 4mv, international stuff, etc. Pandemic aside (as we've seen countless artists made a pandemic era thrive) is Interscope going to continue to give Gaga the sh*t end of the stick for future eras? Or does she not enjoy making mvs anymore and mainly does it to fit the bill assigned from the label?

I'm so interested to see what the post-pandemic, House of Gucci, make-up mogul LG7 era will be like. Will they make up for the stuff missed out on Chromatica era?

Skylar Grey is just one of the many women who got spat out and mistreated by a major label, used for her writing skills and promised support for her solo career but never really given it. Hope she's well and knows her worth.

Tbh Gaga is way too big for the label to tell her what to do!Like whatever she does it’s a fact it will sell. We’re talking about a woman who’s been in this industry for sooo long.So i don’t think they’re telling her what to do.And the leaked documents kind of proved it :iamfair:

Economy

Well that explains why they don't wanna try to push HMH :deadbanana:

Well since it's in the movie I'm not even sure who has the copyrights to that song. If they don't own it I guess they don't wanna spend the money promoting something they don't get the revenue for

But still, keeping Gaga popular will still keep paying off in the long term

Is this sarcasm sis? If they don't allot the budget to the artist, they gotta work with what they got. I think is why Gaga used her own $$$ for ARTPOP era stuff
