Also, the fact that Jessica Chastain said multiple times that she prepared for that one role for 10 years (TEN YEARS for a single role in a two-hour movie) and still got away without making headlines or attracting trolls :partysick:

As @JoanneStan420 explains, her snub was more likely about voting technicalities rather than a reaction to how she campaigned.

But regardless, I don't think we should be asking or hoping that a champion of self-expression will change her personality in order to be accepted by boring folks.

Six months, nine months, since she was 12, she was in character.:lmao:

i think it would be fun if next time she does just a few, big iconic interviews. her colbert interview for ASIB is one of my favorites of all time, and i wish we had gotten something like that this time. the only interview from this era i find myself wanting to rewatch is the kimmel one

one thing i do wonder about though is when the trailer came out, i remember first reactions being like omg this is amazing they're purposely doing ridiculous accents, but then she ran with like the I STUDIED I VERY SPECIFIC ACCENT FOR YEARS. and talked about how it was from northern italy or something and how she used a different one depending on how old patrizia was in that scene. i wonder what would've happened if she would've ran with what people initially assumed

Again, it isn’t locals, it’s literally the Academy lmao agree or not, it’s their opinion which is what awards are all about in the end

TBF, Scott Feinberg, who is regarded as the most "in the known" Oscar reporter didn't seem to chalk Gaga's snub up to her campaigning. In fact, he kind of even alluded to it being more of a social media brouhaha rather than an actual issue for her, though he did have a few lines about her campaigning in his write up of her snub.

Anyway, he basically said she was snubbed because the Academy just loathed the film even if SAG/BAFTA did not and thought it was tonally uneven (too camp in some parts, etc.). Feinberg defn. has an in with those people, so I can believe that they just really hated the movie. Believe he said something along the lines of it's rare for an actor to get a nom if the film isn't well liked, and in this case that honor went to KStew over Gaga, and that Gucci only being Gaga's second big role worked against her.

The backlash wouldn't have been nearly so bad. Honestly, tons of actors stay in accent and have talked about it (the most recent example I can think of is Lily James). I think that plus the mental health comment just gave them a ton of ammunition against her. Most of the stuff, imo, wasn't nearly as crazy as twitter made it out to be and was often way out of context...though clearly she did say a few truly wild, eccentric things.

That said, all the people dragging Gaga over her mental health comment were mostly quiet when Austin Butler recently said he was hospitalized for a week after playing Elvis lol.

Eh, Clayton doesn't really know much. He's terrible at predicting...Feinberg is better. I think it has a good chance of getting nominated for score, though it probably won't win. Gaga could easily win best original song imo.

Oh yeah I fully doubt that was the only thing lmao and I knew after the so so reviews the film got that she prob wouldn't get a nomination as it was the same reason natalie Portman ultimately didn’t win for Jackie even though tbh she had a better performance than Emma stone. The epitome of a snub.

Yes!!. And I blame some twitter fan pages for trying too hard to create "viral" moments using clips of Gaga on interviews that was taken out of contexts which were then retweeted by Film Twitter junkies like those stupid fan pages literally set her up

Yeah there was a bunch of reasons, but the Academy just despising the film was pretty clearly the main one. The fact that they didn't even get a costume nomination was pretty telling that the film was just loathed by AMPAS voters.

I'm curious to how film twt reacts to Austin Butler, because his "had to be hospitalized" was more extreme than anything Gaga said imo (even the mental health comment). If he keeps this up in future interviews....well if they give him a pass, then I'm going to chalk a lot of the backlash against Gaga up to misogyny.

re all of the above: it’s gonna be so funny if she ever does a marvel movie bc she’ll have to figure out how to promote the movie without actually saying anything about the movie 😭

i keep wondering about her potential performance. for some reason i see something like the IWNLA performance from ASIB? although i’m sure she’ll be at the piano who am i kidding lol

Chris Evans

the best actress snub was pretty upsetting because of the precursors but I think there might be truth to the academy just not liking the movie which hurt Gaga's chances- even if she was the best part of the movie.

although they clearly play favorites when their buddies are involved. watching ASIB lose wasn't nearly as painful as watching bohemian f*cking rhapsody win over and over.

Let's push back on the narrative that Lady Gaga needs to to dim her shine so the locals can appreciate her talent.

If she wants that acting Oscar that's what she's gonna have to do

I don't wanna be a negative nancy but... are we really out here thinking they're gonna win the Oscar? The song is cute but it's not revolutionary. I guess the soundtrack is pretty great, but the award could really go to anyone. I'd actually be kinda surprised if they did win

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.
