I didn’t know the song before so was it a huge hit when it originally came out or it was more of an underground song?

It was huge in the 80s. It reintroduced Kate to a broader audience after having released a bunch of really out there, experimental albums. If I remember correctly, Hounds of Love, the album the song is on, even dethroned Like a Virgin. If you want to know more about the song as a part of Kate's discography, you should watch this documentary:

It was a moderate hit stateside but it was pretty huge in Europe.

That being said, it’s staying power has been incredible.

Kate Bush has always been semi-mainstream. This song made it to #3 on the UK singles chart when it first came out.

In all fairness, Hounds of Love is still really experimental.

are they still alive? imagine your song going mainstream like this omh

She is but she's a very reclusive person and barely appears in public, even back when she was still releasing music frequently

Her last album came out 11 years ago (and that's not even her longest break between albums :air:

I agree. But it’s undeniable that the singles and the „softer tone“ (for lack of a better word that) she was going for with them are more accessible than anything on, let’s say, The Dreaming.
