This is a terrible idea. If anything, they had the opportunity to fix the Broadway show, which is overlong and only about half a great score. Make it two and a half hours, like West Side Story. But don't make it two movies. And please don't let this become a trend. So many movie musicals would be ruined if they let them stretch into two films. Get a great editor, make it really pop every second it's on screen.

I don't know a lot about Wicked but this is like the hundredth time I've seen this exact reaction :reductive:

Like no shade, and I say this as someone who has loved Wizard of Oz since I was a toddler... is there really a market for a two part film adaptation of a contemporary Broadway musical that was a mega hit nearly 20 years ago? :partysick: This sadly has over-produced flop written all over it.

Judging from In the Heights... yeah, this man don't seem to know how to adapt stage musicals to film.

You may not like In the Heights, but it was generally well regarded. Personally, I think it's a brilliant adaptation.

This screams they wouldn't be making as big of a profit as they want so they're going to max out their resources in hopes of bringing in more cash.

Just put the gals on stage and film it like Hamilton's OBC did. Or, better yet, keep the idea of Disney-like 2D animation they had forever ago. This has gone through so many hands and is going to misfire extending the wait for the second installment.

Also, not enough time to put in the whole story? The entire Broadway musical fits into an afternoon. And twice on the weekends. Unless he's adapting more of the book (which is a mess IMO), there's no excuse for two movies outside of more money.

Is anyone checking for Wicked like they do Marvel or Star Wars movies? This sounds like a flop.

I guess they are going to split the acts in two movies, but still, are  the show’s acts too long to make two movies?

All of this.
