George Michael Estate accuses Tory Lanez of illegal usage of song

The George Michael estate accused Tory Lanez of lifting “Careless Whisper” without permission on his 2021 song, “Enchanted Waterfall from Lanez’s ‘80s-inspired 2021 album, “Alone at Prom”.
“Enchanted Waterfall” isn’t available on the version of Alone at Prom up on Spotify now but it still appears on Apple Music and the music video remains up on Lanez’s YouTube channel. 

“It was brought to our attention that the song ‘Enchanted Waterfall’ by the artist Tory Lanez incorporated an unauthorized sample of ‘Careless Whisper’ written by George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley….requested permission for this use had been declined in June 2021 so we took immediate action on behalf of the writers, in collaboration with our publishers Warner Chappell Music, to prevent further exploitation as we will not tolerate any unauthorized use of any songs within the catalogues of George Michael and/or Andrew Ridgeley,” a statement released to Variety says.

The Michael estate is fiercely protective of the late singer’s copyrights: They, along with Warner Chappell, similarly moved to strike rapper Yung Gravy’s track “Flex Season” (which also sampled “Careless Whisper”) from Spotify in 2020.

In other Tory Lanez legal matters, the next hearing in his trial over the July 2020 incident in which Megan Thee Stallion claims he shot her in the feet is scheduled for April 5.

The Into The Groove rip off always makes me giggle bc it’s sounds like a kid’s bop rip off 

But yeah this is so messy. The album is kinda good and it sucks it’s being tarnished like this, deservedly so tho

Tory requested for permission, it was denied but he used this song anyway. They can easily prove this rip off.
Lorde's "Solar Power" sounds similar but it was inspired by Primal Scream's 'Loaded', not George Michael's song.

George Michael’s estate might lose this one.  I think they changed it up enough to get away with it.
