Its such a sad situation with no perfect solution but Russia cant get away with what they did.

 

I really feel for the innocent Russian population. Or even the Russian population that does support Putin but only because of Propaganda and because they dont know any better

 

Unfortunately it is virtually impossible to put enough pressure on Russias Government on sanctions to Government members alone. You need to really criple Russia as a whole to really try to get the Government to stand down and theres no way to do that in a way that doesnt hurt the Russian population at least economically

 

It is what it is. Hopefully it is as short lived as possible and if it somehow leads to change the Russians will be better off in the long term... Hopefully

But @Teletubby is also correct that the Government keeps itself there by propaganda, controlled media, undemocratic means like arresting anyone that protests and offers resistance etc

 

They can take the Government out but it takes a lot of courage, boldness and ability to see thru propaganda. Not as simple as ur making it sound. If it was always that easy as u make it sound most revolutions wouldnt often take so long to happen or go thru so many failed attempts until they succeed

Indeed, it's way easier for us to see through it compared to russians who grew up with propaganda TV and now have the internet accessible from Russia being blocked/ limited/ censored...

Also Putin just voted in emergency laws to HEAVILY punished Russians folks who go to public protests, share "fake news" AKA infos that bothered the Russian government... We tell them to attack their leaders while being in our comfort but they have a target on them if they do so it's easy for us to say. Maybe we wouldn't do more in their shoes, we can't know until it happens to us actually...

This. Its so easy to criticize when ur not in other shoes or when its not u.

 

But that is our culture in general. I see the same kind of tendency in thinking when it comes to climate change and no one thinks they have to do anything because only the rich and politicians alone have a duty...

 

 or issues of income inequality when middle class criticizes billionaires who have too mucb and hoars (as they should btw) but then most of them barely pay attention to things like not wasting or throwing away stuff excessively when theres literally starving children in Africa and that a typical middle class person in a developed country still has more purchasing power than their global fair share if it was all distributed equally to all 7.5 billion people on Earth

 

Not to distract from the main point atm which is Russia and Ukraine. Im just pointing out this is a symptom of a chronic issue in our culture of always pointing fingers and judging others on what they should do even tho often they arent doing much to stand up to any major global problem themselves other than acting all woke on twitter of forums like this

Not y’all acting like Russia is a free American democracy… you literally get arrested if you protest this war + a lot of anti Putin things. There is nothing the average citizen can do. Not even those in the Kremlin can speak against him rn, even tho a lot of them are shook to the core by this. I realize there’s no sanctions that can hurt him without hurting his people, but let’s not grow the narrative that “maybe the fallout wouldn’t have been so bad if the Russian citizens had done more.”

Hate to make the comparison, but the only way WW2 ended is Hitler having a mental breakdown over tanking too many times in such a few hours that he realized he cant win… so he commits suicide. Aka nothing to do w his citizens (who some were also anti war ofc, but had to hide it. After spending 2 years on quarantine over Covid, there is no way Putin is sane anymore.

I never said that, I was making reference to the need for civil disobedience, Russians are the only ones that can overthrow Russia rn
