Russia really wants WWIII.

Canada has 3,400 military personnel to deploy if necessary, our National Defence minister said. I really hope it won't get to that point, but if it does, the Ukraine and countries alike need to be protected.

Russia needs big structural change. A lot of people argue that NATO provoked Russia, but honestly, Putin had a choice not to do this.

If by “a lot of people” you mean the Russian government and their trolls/informants, then yes. No one is legitimately arguing that NATO provoked Russia, that is just one of Russia’s false pretexts they used to invade Ukraine.

This war is solely on Russia - the blood of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians is on their hands.

Bc thats what started WWI: Someone killing a political leader. Ofc thats not what you meant but the Kremlin will probably view both events equally lol

The US also has a messy history of killing and installing leaders, especially in the Middle East :spin:

I'm not sure if it'd do much good to kill the man himself. He just needs to be left powerless to threaten anyone.

I'm actually wondering if his crazy ass would go so far as to begin dangling the idea of a nuclear war. I know many people said that the idea of that is extremely far-fetched and ridiculous, but he is absolutely insane and appears to have a will that stops at nothing until he gets what he wants.

I've read somewhere men aged 18-60 in Ukraine are not allowed to leave the country. This is a mess, innocent civilians that have not even signed up for this are getting swollen into this sinking hole. How horrible.

He's already hinted at nuclear force during this, hasn't he?

It sounds like unless he's bluffing, if anyone bordering him actually does join NATO and a more robust military counters whatever insane move he makes, someone is getting nuked.

I don't like sounding pessimistic, but this while situation is utterly... f***ed.

Let's be clear: Finland and Sweden are under threat from Russia whether or not they join NATO. Putin has made it very clear he wants to reestablish the borders of old. You don't have to read between the lines; he said as much. He wants what he sees as his territory back, and I think he has a very generous view of what he believes is Soviet/Russian territory. So if you think he's going to stop with Ukraine, you're just as naïve as the people who thought he would stop with the Donbass. And if you think being a NATO member or not will save you, it won't. He is going to keep pushing, and we need to be ready for the sake of Europe and for the sake of the liberal world order.

If you are any nation in Eastern Europe, trouble is at your door.

Putin has always been aggressive towards Sweden and Finland. Mostly Sweden as of late since they basically control the Baltic sea with their island Gotland that Russia desperately wants. If Sweden joins NATO Russia would have the US right at their doorstep which scares him to death. He would also be locked out of the Baltic sea, a key area to reach central Europe. As for Finland, well they literally share 50% if not more of their border with Russia, and pretty close to Moscow too.

Although Finland and Sweden are not eastern countries, they have a history of conflict with Russia. Last Sweden had a war against Russia was in 1788 but still...

At this point Sweden and Finland are shooting in their own legs for not taking any actions. The speciality about their application to NATO is that the 5th Article effects them immediately, even if the ''official'' process would take year(s).

How has Russia remained that large? Are there separatist movements going on inside or what? Europe and Asia are so vast, you'd think a country spanning that many time zones would have some disconnect between the East and West ends.

Yes, thank you. I mean the border nations that aren't already a part of NATO.

Isn't that a primary reason he's threatening further action? He doesn't want to be more boxed in by NATO because that means he can't expand his scope as far as he wants without more of a fight.

If I'm completely off base, forgive my ignorance. It is a lot of new information to me and I'm trying to keep up.

I hope the right chain of events will happen and Moldova will urgentely join Romania. Support for unification is strong in Romania, Moldova is Romania's sisternation, speaks the same Language and shares the same history. Romanians are open to it, and this would give Moldova instant security based on the 5th Article. Russians can keep Transnistria, they already control it.

You are right, Ukraine joining NATO would be more significant than these already existing borders, because is closer to Moscow and Russia is a paranoid state. The entire Eastern Europe is a huge plain that makes Putin feel insecure and paranoid, for this reason he wants to grab as much land as he can. Somewhere in his subconscious, the ideal dream borders of Russia are distant natural barriers: the Baltic Sea, the Vistula river, the Carpathians and the Black Sea. Russia hates itself for being a flatland and tries to compensate it.

I have no clue what the precedent is, but I hope this ends with him finally out of power and facing the consequences of his many crimes.
