a part of me thinks this is exploitative but then the other part of me says we would be praising a doc released on this issue for shedding light on the war and atrocities if we did not know there was a big actor attached to it. 

I choose to view this in a positive light and I hope this sheds light on the situation...maybe even Russia citizens will be able to watch it and see how wrong their governments actions are towards a neighboring state. It could do more good than bad. It's important we capture horrible moments like these for future generations to learn.

What's the intention?

To have the "exclusive" scoop on a historical current event to later sell and exploit to some streaming platform for millions of dollars???

Oooor...is he trying to capture as much footage as possible to showcase what's really going on so once this hopefully all dies down we can use this information to bring Putin to justice for his war crimes...

Whatever opinion is about this guy, having a big name attach to such a docu will help to shed light on these events and reach more people, it's Hollywood notoriety for useful leverage.

Hopefully this is a successful and helpful thing. I wonder if he's in any elevated danger since Russia seems to heavily favor propo and this is obviously an effort against them.

An unbiased portrayal I would appreciate, but there's no such thing as an unbiased portrayal, and my cynical knee-jerk reaction is they'll pander and portray Russia in a sympathetic way... Idk what Penn thinks about Putin but considering the things he said, I wouldn't be surprised if he admired him at least in some ways - manly menly men tend to really REALLY like other manly men... for some reason
