The biggest reason why Gaga didn't get nominated

As valid as the other reasons are (the accent was a sticking point, the movie wasn't good enough overall, her promo interviews were too weird, voting was very close, etc), there is an even bigger reason that is at the forefront of my mind. It was something I had theorised ever since her role was announced and yet I think I've only seen one person at most bring it up: she was playing a villain and villain roles are notoriously difficult to win awards for. It's hard to even get nominated.

I've seen many a great villain onscreen and was surprised that when it came to accolades, almost everything went to the heroes. I think it's a natural subconscious thing to root for the good guys so we don't immediately think of evaluating a villain's performance. I also think awards committees fear what message it sends if they give the award to someone who was depicting evil. If that happens year after year, it puts a real downer on the ceremony and it's much better to have choices that uplift the audience instead of depressing them. And it sends a really bad message to society if evil characters are praised every year. Because let's face it, villain roles require actors to do quite difficult things that heroes don't have to do - making belittling comments and shouting at your co-stars, maybe even carrying out scenes of abuse and murder. But that's all the more reason why more villain roles should be nominated because they require a higher degree of acting than the average hero role.

I don't know why more awards committees can't put real life morals aside and realise a good performance is a good performance, regardless of the morality of the character. But they seem steadfast in only wanting heroes for the most part and I can't recall the last time a best actress award went to a villain (Gaga's GG win for the Countess notwithstanding). I feared this would hinder Gaga's chances from day one and it seems I've been proven right, not just for the Oscars, but other ceremonies too as she has really struggled to actually win anything for this role.

This is why I'm hoping Gaga will pursue more hero narratives in future if she wants that Oscar because as fun as a villain is to play, it's going to be hard for her to achieve her goal if she keeps on taking on more Countess/Patrizia roles. She's at the right age where she can play grieving mother/widow roles and other tear-jerking stuff that the academy loves. Not the most fun acting to watch but it's what gets those awards.

I'm not sure they care that much about that. Some of the best performances and most memorable ones are of villains. Charlize Theron for Monster, Joaquin Phoenix and Heath Ledger for Joker, Christoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds (A nazi), Natalie Portman for Black Swan, Anthony Hopkins for Hannibal, Javier Bardem for No Country for Old Men, etc.

Personally, I think the biggest reason the Academy snubbed her was because she didn’t make a Sour Candy music video. The film crowd watches out for this kind of thing. There were red flags everywhere tbh. A voter was allegedly quoted as saying, “she could’ve had Jennie and Rosé hitting those notes and Lisa spitting bars. Jisoo could’ve just been standing there looking pretty or sumn. Would’ve been dope.”

Why is Gaga always singled out when it comes to interviews? I swear, like every actor always out campaigning and giving out detailed stories about the role and cinema history, right?

I heard from the vents that some of the voters were really mad as they spent all their savings buying the ticket for the chromatica ball

Quizás bastaba respirar, sólo respirar, muy lento...💙

She has to stop saying crazy things in her interviews. She comes across as being fake and it always overshadows her work. There’s a reason why most actors hate doing interviews…

I heard from my uncle who works at Netflix that last year Blackpink invited Gaga to perform Sour Candy at The Show but she declined because she was working on her Patrizia accent and didn't want to mess it up so members of the Academy got mad when she didn't show up and decided not to vote for Gaga for Best Actress.

Or maybe people need to stop making creepy compilation videos of her using her pre-planned marketing talking points to make it seem like she’s fake or lying :triggered:

Truly cannot believe we’ve reached a point in this woman’s career where her own supposed fans think she’s being too weird and dramatic :madge:

She is a bigger star. We’re talking about a huge name and anything she says, eventually, will get blown out of proportion.

Bonkers

here's the thing - the NUMBER ONE reason Lady Gaga CARES she didn't get nominated:

THE PRESSURE FROM ALL THE FANS WHO ARE "DEVASTATED" OVER IT.

If people weren't counting on her and so DESPERATE to validate their [i don't even know what you are trying to validate in yourself by investing in another person winning EVERYTHING] then it really wouldn't be a big deal for her at all.

She has had immense success in her life.  Wealth, fame, popularity.  Music, acting, corporate ventures - and she is acknowledged as a GENUINELY GOOD PERSON by most of the world.

It's fine.  The fact that her work as an actress is acclaimed and known to be excellent is such a win. So many in her position try and end up being between "ok" and a joke.  I'm not going to name names :reductive:

The point is, obsessing and being upset doesn't help anything.  it doesn't change anything.

LAMENTING about WHY or what she SHOULD have done - doesn't help or change anything.

Anyway, good night  :vegas:
