Those are objectively bad films, with no message, no acting achievements, and no interesting plots. The reality is that movie-goers simply do not appreciate good quality cinema. It is what it is. I prefer Oscars to have lower ratings than to be some kind of a Kids Choice Awards that applaud popularity over quality. mother, what must i do? Arloway 147
Ratings decline also have to do with the growth of streaming/online services. People, especially younger ones, are not crazy for the idea of sitting in front of a TV and watch a 3-hour ceremony. They rather go on Youtube to watch a few clips that they care about, or scroll thru highlights on TikTok/Twitter. It happens with almost every ceremonies including the grammy, vma, ama... However Gaga is probably the one exception here. The ceremony she attended in 2019 remains the only one that saw an increase in rating since 2014. The viewership on social media/Youtube is even more sensational (I believe that Shallow performance had 500M views now). VMA 2020 was also one of the very few ceremonies that didn't decrease drastically since the Pandemic. We do need to take in the factor that, AMPAS voters are not AMPAS ceremony producers. If the nominations are up to ABC and the show producers, I guarantee you Lady Gaga will be nominated and even win the award. But voters don't care about that. It's the Academy's lost. And I highly suspect they'll award her another best original song next year as a "payback". If so, I hope Gaga doesn't attend the ceremony at all. It's not worth it. I prefer Oscars to have lower ratings than to be some kind of a Kids Choice Awards that applaud popularity over quality. i think the very notion that a movie that hundreds of millions of people enjoyed cannot be good is so elitist. there are many different things that can make a film good. i have seen 8 of the 10 BP nominees, and i have also seen spider-man. i cried, laughed, and cheered at spider-man. i did not do the same with the other films. the whole point of expanding BP to ten movies was to try and include a bit more variety of taste. i'm not saying superhero movies should be in BP every year or even every other year, but it seems so condescending to say that one of the highest grossing movies of all time (and one that came out during a pandemic and in a surge) must be bad simply bc it's a superhero movie. that is like saying poker face can't be a good song because it was clearly written to be (and then became) a commercial hit
