Tiffany and Pharrell Williams accused of copying 17th-century glasses

Yesterday, Nigo unveiled his debut collection for French luxury fashion house Kenzo. Sitting front row at the show was Pharrell Williams, who took the opportunity to announce a hotly-anticipated collaboration with legendary American jewellery mainstay Tiffany & Co, wearing a pair of bejewelled sunglasses. Williams called the collaboration an “engagement” between himself and Tiffany's.

Instagram fashion vigilante account Diet Prada pointed out that Williams' sunglasses looked almost identical to a pair of 17th century Mughal spectacles that are on auction at Sotheby's, which the auction house says are called Emeralds for Paradise and that carry a cool price tag of anywhere between one-and-a-half to two-and-a-half million pounds, as reported by Sotheby's in October 2021 when the glasses went up for auction.

In terms of cultural significance, it is noted by Sotheby’s chairman that the spectacles carry special spiritual connotations, with diamonds signifying “celestial light”, and bright stones like emeralds being seen as ““vehicles for astral forces” during the Mughal period. Within Islamic culture, the colour green symbolises paradise, salvation and eternal life.

Who has any complains about this should really check their priorities.

I would be pretty pissed of if someone stole my designs and used them as if they were there own

Whoever designed them has probably been dead for like 400 years:laughga:

Either way, although there is a clear similarity they are far from identical. The shape and size is pretty different, it is definitely an original design.

Another day of y’all pretending to care about something you otherwise wouldn’t had the source not sensationalized it.

I don’t see the problem here. The original design is over 400 years old. And I’m entirely sure when they go on sale there will be a blurb about the history of the design on the website. It would be completely ignorant of Tiffany’s to sell these and pretend they're an original creation. I don’t get the sense that this is something Pharrell is trying to pass off as his own unique idea, especially seeing how quick and easy that was to disprove.

but sure, go ahead and keep calling him an unoriginal loser because he had an idea to bring a piece of irrelevant art no one was thinking about into the 21st century.
