Of all the names being tossed around, I think Colman and Kristen are probably the most deserving to win. But again, it's a f*cked up popularity contest...I could even see Colman missing out on a nomination.

I love Chastain and I'm not trying to drag her...but I could absolutely see her winning (if she gets in) due to her campaigning like crazy and riding that overdue narrative. She's apparently showed up at like every single SAG screening, has had all her Hollywood friends show up, etc.

I will be shocked if Gaga isn't nominated.

I will also be shocked if Gaga wins.

Agree...

Yeah, right now I think she has like a 70-90% of being nominated (box office success, being singled out by critics as the best thing about the film, CCA/NYFCC/GG, etc.)

And around a 5% of actually winning.

I'd be VERY shocked if Rachel gets a nomination, especially over Gaga. We shall see. It is a tight race this year.

I'm not trying to hate on Rachel, but if she gets nominated over Cruz, Renate, Gaga, Thompson, Hudson, etc.....it's going to be another example of how it's just a weird popularity contest in some ways (as in, the Spielberg juice would have helped her).

Agree that it's a tight race. I go back and forth on Alana and whether she'll push anyone out...it's honestly kind of an "easy" role compared to the other contenders. Most of the praise for her performance is due to her being "likeable" versus carrying any heavy emotional scenes.  I feel like she's heavily benefiting from the fact that the film community basically has a collective hard on for PTA (even with the problematic aspects of the film). And yet I could see her riding that positive media straight to a nomination over Gaga or Jessica or Kidman.

I find that hard to believe. To be honest, there's only 2 acting performances I've heard being massively praised all year and that's Gaga and Kristen. It's a question of who's going to nominated around them at this point. Gaga's being nominated left right and centre right now, it's rare that someone like that misses out on an Oscar nomination. The academy like her, they've nominated her before, she's performed 3 times before, she's a credible choice in their eyes. What ultimately does Variety know that everyone else doesn't? And what sway do they have? I'd personally find it pointless to nominate someone for a role in a remake (yes, ASIB was a remake but that was new characters, script, songs, but this is a literal re-telling). And the original West Side Story won 11 out of 12 Oscars. To so much as nominate anyone for major awards for its remake all these years later would be...reductive.

I've heard it said that nominations go to movies with less commercial success. The awards shows are pr events in a way. HOG has made more $ than any of those 5 movies. I don't want to jinx it either. The cast has done so many press interviews, they deserve to get good box $. They were getting overexposed, but maybe it just seems so because of this site.

Personally, I've only seen the Tammy Faye movie of those 5 and only because it's on HBO along with Dune and Succession. I really don't know how anyone decides who is a better actress, when they each have different roles. I could imagine deciding if they were all playing the same part, or all reading for the same role.

She went from Cher to Madge :messga:

Jk. She's an amazing actor, and she made the role hers, but I agree it's not an Oscar worthy performance. She needs more roles to prove herself as a titan, and I know she will eventually achieve that. But let's enjoy HoG for what it is: A fun and messy film

Well! Not exactly. Cher earned her first Oscar nomination in 1984 (for supporting actress but close enough), then got snubbed in 1986 for Mask, a role which she won Best Actress at Cannes, and then won in 1988 for Moonstruck! So : P she could still be Cher!

Is this really that surprising? House of Gucci wasn’t very well received. I enjoyed Gaga’s acting in it though, especially towards the end. I’m guessing it was 1) The overall film, and 2) Possibly the accent(s) :green:

Honestly, I read the comments before in this thread and there was no one who wrote "Gaga deserves it because...". I read a lot of speculations instead.

You know, opinions should start with "I think". It comes across as arrogant and know-it-all otherwise. :haroon:

Well then, I THINK you're wrong.... hahahahaha just kidding.

I'm just a muggle when it comes to movies and predictions, but I think House Of Gucci will get a handful of good nominations. I just hope Gaga gets the chance to be nominated for best actress, maybe she won't win, but the opportunity to be nominated is enough for her to prove her hard work in that movie.

She HAS to get a nomination…right?!? Did we not all see the same film? The level of commitment and passion that she put in this role surpasses ASIB in my opinion. I haven’t seen the Coleman film but since she won recently I don’t think she’ll get the win. Stewart I thought did good enough but compared to Gaga’s performance I think Gaga had more to do with the role and therefore displayed her ability more. Stewart will definitely get nominated but a win? Idk, the Oscars eat up that dark performance stuff almost as much as we eat up Dark Pop but we’ll see.

Frances McDormand won in 2018 and 2021

Have you seen the Lost Daughter?

I watched the Lost Daughter last night. And reading about all the hype and acclaim, dare I say I was underwhelmed. Especially by Colman. She was way above and beyond in the Favourite.

I also felt both Dakota Johnson and Jessie Buckley, outshone her everytime they were on the screen. Colman's character didn't really come across as a Oscar winning standout performance, which is usually what the Academy steers towards to.

I'm not very good with Social Mediaᵀᴹ
