Damage to the ozone can fluctuate based on varying temperatures which alter chemical reactions and so does atmosphere flows But as a general rule what was damaging it was CFC chemicals because when the chlorine particles broke off the CFCs they reacted with O3 (ozone, 3 oxygen atoms) in a way that broke the oxygen molecule bonds apart hence damaging and depleating the layer slowly. Temperatures affect the rate of reaction which is why some parts of the globe were more prone to ozone depletion than others and why the size of holes would even fluctuate throughout the seasons of the year. CFCs were banned in most Countries after it was discovered how harmful they are to the ozone layer but it took decades for healing to start The Ozone Hole in Antartica was by far the largest ever and its been slowly recovering since late 1990s so it took over 20 years to fully close Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

The Ozone layer is still not back to pre industrial levels and if im not mistaken a few Countries still havent banned CFC use But while the problem hasnt fully gone away it definitely is not one of the more serious pressing issues it once was Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

On that note, I remember there were certain days certain license plates weren't allowed to drive (or something close), to lower emissions. Awesome that it's closed.
