I hope this new guidance is taken into consideration by my school district. While their efforts are noble and admirable, they've been keeping students out of school for up to 14 days if they are close contact and test negative (!!). That's been such a mess. I've had one student who miss almost 30 days of the fall semester because of the quarantine protocol. Fortunately, we have the ability to get work online for them as needed, but still, that's a long time to be away from school.

I honestly feel like we are headed down the road of people exposed won't even have to quarantine. Which scares me.

Hmm… okay that does make a lot of sense. If you wear a mask after you’re probably good afterwards.

I don’t know all of the guidelines from the CDC, but where I’m from, we’ve had this measurement for months, if not a year. Basically, you’re isolating for 5 days, and then, if you have no symptoms, and you’ve gotten a negative test result, you’re off to go. Obviously, it is recommended to do some self-testing at home or to do a test at a testing location, but I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad idea. But obviously, in my own position, at times it’s a bit ridiculous. For example, The Netherlands is going to enforce 5+ days mandatory quarantine for travellers outside of ‘Schengen Countries’ (which is most of the countries in the Balkans and East Europe) and because of this measurement, I will be incapable of even considering travelling back to family and friends. But travellers from other Schengen Countries, they can simply waltz in with a vaccination certificate and go on vacation if they’d want to….

The article states that if someone still has symptoms after 5 days, they are to continue isolating. But, based on my experience with covid in January, there is no one enforcing any isolation/quarantine. I got a call from the local health department the day after I tested positive and then again a week later to get an update. They never officially cleared me from isolation, and since I worked from home at the time it was no big deal, but it's truly just a honor system situation

Contrast that to Ontario where I was literally tracked by the government for 14 days when I went to see my then fiance earlier this year. I had to download an app, then input the address of the place we were staying, who was staying there, provide evidence we had enough provisions for 2 weeks, among other personal details. I had to check-in on the app daily and accurately report any symptoms (I had none thankfully), every three days I would get a call from an agent to verify the information, and I swear to god they even sent an undercover government employee to sit on the street and ensure I didn't come out of the house

People who have been exposed or have the virus haven’t been quarantining since last year bc they don’t like to follow rules or think this virus is a joke, anyway. 
 

this pandemic is such a mess and we are all so tired. Praying things will finally get better.

I'm assuming since you were visiting Canada, you are an American citizen and as such were a visitor to the country during the period where the borders were still technically closed except for family and loved ones.

As a Canadian, I'm glad you were pressured to comply to quarantine guidelines. Sorry you felt this was oppressive or whatever, but I'd like to point out the alarming difference in infection/death rate between Canada and the US. We've taken it very seriously up here, and the result of that is much less death and destruction to our infrastructure.

Also... I can assure you that you're not important enough for the Canadian government to hire an undercover agent to make sure you don't leave your house... you can stop with the hyperbole

Where did I say I felt oppressed?? I was simply making a point to show that, compared to North Carolina, Ontario was taking the isolation/quarantine regulations seriously. It was literally no hassle or inconvenience to open the app, complete the questionnaire, and go about my day.  As for your snarky comment about being in the country despite a closed border, I had legal permission from the government to visit my fiance, by the way, not some random friends.  I wasn't just taking a holiday to another country for the hell of it. I apologize if I've misinterpreted the tone of what you posted, but I've seen you pop up in a lot of COVID-related threads for the past month or two making comments about how you don't think omicron is a big deal, criticizing different public health policies, etc. That led me to read what you posted as a criticism of protocol in Canada.

I understood you were visiting your fiancé - which is why I said that I assumed you were there despite the closed borders except for family and loved ones 

I'm not bitter - I'm just tired of all the people without a background in medicine acting like they're an expert on what should be done. It's been incredibly stressful living on top of the dumpster fire that is America throughout all this with so much pressure to open our borders.
