Gaga, Mental Health, and Awards Season

I feel like there's something admirable, in a way, that Gaga has consistently discussed her mental health. And I think she's truthful about it—as someone with OCD, a lot of her comments ring accurately. Also, I feel like the music world is more understanding of such things and not just mental health...but eccentricity in general.

The film world on the other hand...well she's getting dragged hard for her recent interview. And tbf, if one wasn't aware that Gaga has talked like this for ages...I could see someone thinking it was BS to campaign for the film. Do you think her publicists will get her to rein it in? Like Will Smith has dialed it way back down? Cause I am wondering if this will backfire on her, especially as Gucci was seen as kind of a silly film that received mixed reviews. Other women are playing the 'campaign' season a lot better.

On the other hand, there's something to be said for Gaga being true to herself and not glad handing/faking her way during awards season (in some ways, her answers, even though people who aren't aware of her might cringe and think they are BS, seem a lot more Gaga than she ever did during ASIB's run)...even if it results in her getting dragged by film twitter (and possibly people in the film industry).

TLDR: I also don't think this will hurt Gaga in general. Outside of the film world, no one really cares about this sort of thing....it's not the sort of celebrity news that gets into the general public like Ben Affleck on Howard Stern, Gaga and Bradley, etc.

I don't think it's detrimental to her career. I think it humanizes her, which is a good thing, It helps her connect to fans.

Honestly i don't know. I don't know how other people, movie people, see this and are dragging her, she is just being her. She didn't said anything to be dragged for, or criticized for, unless people are idiots. However if the movie people don't understand her mental health struggles, then honestly is up to them. She should just talk what she feels, unless she feels like she can handle it, if people are just disrespectful. She "plays the game" with her cards, with who she is, her struggles, her strength, maybe other actors have more interesting life's, more acting experience and "play the game" better. She can only play with what's meaningful to her, i guess.

Yeah I don't think this will hurt her career and it's part of the reason her fans love her, but I do wonder if this might sort of her Oscar campaign in general which is usually (at least for women) about being charming and pretty and a lot of BS. For men, on the other hand, they tend to be more accepting of method acting or discussing pain or mental heath issues.

I just hope it doesn't like hurt her if some people are dismissive (hopefully she's not aware of it)...as she clearly does want to be taken seriously as an actress and be accepted by the film world. But there definitely seems to be some sorts of sneering, she's just a pop star vibe this time around (like the multiple articles on her accent...that focused solely on her and not even the men) and they are seizing on things like this to drag her.

It does kind of make me appreciate music journalists more...who despite being petty sometimes tend to be less...mean.

Christ... women always have to deal with all the BS. I mean if I happened to watch K Stewart or Nicole Kidman talking the exact same thing in a interview, i would just respect and learn one more thing about them.

The "she's just a pop star" will always be used against her buy some unfortunately. But that doesn't have anything to do with her talking about her struggles, her way, acting process... Being catty about it or shady it's just stupid. The thing is , i know about Stan world in music lol, stan wars, stupid arguments, dragging artist cause they simply are your favorite or your just jealous cause some other artists is doing "better" than your favorite. I thought movies weren't like this, turns out it's all the same thing or even worse lol.

Yeah, I don't mean it as a drag on the following men.... but watching film people get frothy over Gaga reminds me that a woman (or a man of color) could never, ever get away with acting like Joaquin Phoenix, Adam Driver, Benedict Cumberbatch, etc....particularly the former two.

Gaga has always been emotional and vulnerable when talking about her work, and sometimes it can come across as a little much (thinking sometimes during the ASIB and Joanne promo) but she really wears her heart on her sleeve and at this point I think most people know that's just who she is. And even if some of it is exaggerated, that's also a part of who she is. She sells the hell out of what she does, to get you to buy into it literally and also emotionally. She also does go to extremes and commits 100% to basically everything she does, but that's what makes her special. Who else has the resume that she has? Nobody, literally nobody, and that's because she gives her all.

I'm not too worried about what film twitter thinks because 1) it's twitter, 2) she has already received many very positive reviews on her performance, and 3) she got people into movie theaters, and that matters in 2021.

Yeah, film twitter can be pretty toxic. The new thing is jumping on anyone who dares to say that Licorice Pizza made them the slightest bit uncomfortable. Pop star stans are always fighting, but it's usually petty stuff and they constantly move on...film twitter like fixates and will bully randoms on twitter.

Twitter, in itself, can be unhealthy. I still do find it interesting, though, that music journalists will generally be more accepting and less...unprofessional in some ways....than a lot of film critics on twitter. TBF, a lot of major film critics also stay off twitter in general.

She's being genuine but creeps like this will always mock her

See...i would never read stupid comments like this, I'm not on Twitter. It's just sad, honestly. This people just want be be shady and mocking for fun. It's all for fun, they don't give a **** about Gaga, or specifically her mental problems, to them she is just taking about it cause she wants to be nominated. There's no reason with discussing anything with them. It's whatever, it never even crossed my mind that this interview would be perceived like this.

True, that was one of the people I was thinking of...might want to delete it though (or crop out his handle) as people might swarm his tweet if they see it posted here.

I think stans need to stop worrying about what people on Twitter think. If you like the movie that’s all that should matter, not about what some person you’ve never met thinks.

I think if anyone on her PR or awards campaign team told her to rein in talking about her mental health to help her chances at an Oscar she would fire them tbh

Speaking her truth has always had some people laughing at her, she knows that, we know that... but it's also saved people's live and she cares about that more than any award and (hopefully!) always will.

It does suck that people are hard on her, but haters gonna hate, nothing new under the sun
