Also, isn't fruits and vegetables expensive in the US?

No it's all a big misconception spread by the meat companies. Meat prices are rising like crazy here and I stick with cheap fruits like bananas and frozen fruit. Only get organic stuff when I'm eating the skin like cucumber, etc.

EDIT: If I do get more expensive produce like avocado, I take it as an investment in my health versus not getting all the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants which fight cancer/free radicals

OH This actually reminded me of something I'd totally forgotten! Slightly unrelated but however... When I was in the US in 2014 I was sat next to a South African lady on the plane, and she told me about how after she immigrated she ate the same exact diet in America that she ate back in South Africa and ballooned in weight. She said that the food in the US is higher in fats, sugars, and GMO.

And I can testify for that! When I arrived myself I was shocked at how sweet everything is in the US. Literally everything, even BREAD from the supermarket tasted sweet to me. And all the people in hostels from other countries agreed with me, but the Americans couldn't taste the sweetness because they were used to it. My American friend though I was crazy for calling the bread sweet. I thought she was crazy for not being able to taste it. They consume a tonne of sugar because they just can't taste it/are desensitised to it

Also yes, I believe fresh fruit and veges are slightly more expensive comparably, but not crazily... but fast food is very cheap and HUGE portions. So why would anyone buy fresh vegetables that they have to cook, when there's a Mc Donalds on every corner they can get a huge meal at for cheap and with no effort? They're set up for failure

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

Yes, unhealthy fast food is much cheaper than good quality healthy food. Plus, there are food deserts affecting approximately 13.5 million people, which are “an urban area in which it is difficult to buy affordable or good-quality fresh food.”

It’s sad. The lack of education, “super sized” fast food + sedentary lifestyle is a real crisis.

Well it's mainly because I don't want to move too far from my family. Y'all expect me to move to Europe and fly overseas to see my family several times a year ? :bear:

Fair enough :ladyhaha:

That's so crazy man. People just don't even have a chance. It's soo crazy to me that grown adults can literally not understand nutrition. I've seen so many cases of Americans thinking that potato chips and mc donalds are healthy and not understanding why you should drink water instead of soda etc. And when I was younger I was judgemental because I thought it was ignorance, but it's actually a lack of education. Education that I thought was basic education and common knowledge. I also just don't understand why a country wouldn't want to invest in this education

It's REALLY, really sad. Also, it's such a privilege to have a grocery store with fresh produce. As others have mentioned, poor people and underserved communities often live in "food deserts" where they literally have no access to healthy food. They end up developing diseases and conditions that force them to work 2+ jobs to afford medications. The government just doesn't care.

EDIT: For context, I grew up in southern US and was brought up on fast food and sweets. Tons of processed meat and the like. It wasn't until my late 20s that I stumbled started trying out eating nothing processed, then moved to vegetarian, now mostly vegan.

Its cheaper than meat but still more expensive than many processed foods or carb loaded foods which i find messed up

Here in Canada a big box of joe louis costs less per gram than a stack of kale for example :madge:

Yeah, like I said in a other comment, when you view it as "Ok, I'm spending more now on this produce, but it's an investment in my health versus some condition I may develop and need medication or surgery for later in life, by eating more processed stuff"

Plus I'm really active in the gym, yoga, hiking, so I feel best when I have clean fuel and REAL food.
