Album covers without font (your thoughts?)

I prefer them without font most of the times, but I love it when the title is actually part of the artwork and not just some random text written on top of an already beautiful portrait. Gaga's ARTPOP and Charli XCX's Sucker are the first examples that come to my mind.

I know font choices are usually a miss, but for someone who doesn't have any idea what artwork or artist they're looking at, it's such a big help. I'm ready for the coverlandia era to come back :trollga:

I think all of Gaga’s album would look better without fonts

I kinda feel that physical albums (Vinyl, CDs, Cassettes) should have the title and artist name on the front of the case.

For digital album covers, I don’t think it’s necessary because the album name, Artist, and track are under the picture.

When there is intentional negative blank space that makes room for the title, I think it looks good. The Fame Monster and Joanne cover would look weird without font since theres too much black space. Born This Way (Special Edition) and ARTPOP, are too crowded with the image that I actually think they look better without the title or font. But I do love ARTPOP’s font though. 💅

Yeah it would've been ARTPOP without that grotesque pink font for me too.

Aside from that and Gaga covers in general (all of which slay)

Retro Dance Freak

I really am not liking this new trend of just a photo being used for the album cover, especially because it seems like people are just doing it because they can.
However, Chromatica makes sense to not have text.

I really like when artists choose a font and artwork design to give the feel of the era. Lana does this perfectly, the bold retro feel of the Born To Die logo, the art deco style logo of Honeymoon, the vintage LFL logo. It is so cool when they use those fonts for artworks and everything else throughout the era to make it cohesive and live in its own universe.

I really love Gaga’s covers for TFM, Born This Way and ARTPOP. I think their titles and fonts are perfect because they are refined and reflected throughout the albums rollout. The Fame era was all over the place graphically (obviously, because sis was putting that budget into her origami dresses and hair bows instead as she should) and I actually hate the tacky ‘The Fame’ plastered on the glasses. It just looks so cheap. I would love the album cover if it didn’t have that, and just the LADY GAGA at the bottom.

Taylor Swift hasn’t been putting logos on her artworks since folklore and while I think hers are still decent covers (Fearless TV is phenomenal) I miss the iconic and sleek fonts and artworks of Red/1989/reputation.

Don't be insecure if your heart is pure.

I don’t mind whatever it is, as long as it works. I really enjoyed what Iggy azalea did for her 2019 singles. The text wasn’t added in post production because it was part of the set.

in the age of streaming, text is kinda secondary as it will always be below the cover art

text on album covers used to be really critical for record sales back in the day though!

I think it works well on albums that are all about creating iconic cover art but on the average album cover, no. And it also works on really well-remembered albums because to simply quite the cover is all you'll need to have people know what it is but if it's some indie album that didn't sell, it'll always be met with "what's its name?" so what's the point if you're not a megastar?
