Dave Chappelle defends JK Rowling, calls himself a TERF

Dave Chappelle is sparking conversation about transphobia as he addresses his past comments about the trans community in his latest Netflix comedy special.

"The Closer," the sixth installment in the comedian's Netflix deal which he describes as "his last special for a minute," includes tongue-in-cheek jokes about race, the coronavirus pandemic and negotiating "the release of DaBaby" after the rapper's homophobic comments. However, Chappelle's comments on the transgender community, a topic for which he has received backlash for previously, are stirring up more feedback.

Chappelle doubled down on transphobic jokes by weighing in on comments author J.K. Rowling made in December 2019. The "Harry Potter" author  conflated sex with gender and defended ideas suggesting that changing one's biological sex was a threat to her own gender identity.

"They canceled J.K. Rowling, my God," Chappelle says. "Effectually she said gender was a fact, the trans community got mad as (expletive), they started calling her a TERF.

"I'm Team TERF. I agree. I agree, man. Gender is a fact," he added.

From the Daily Beast:

[...] Chappelle then tries to convince the audience—in the crowd and at home—that he’s never made any explicitly anti-transgender jokes, requesting that the audience “go back” and revisit his specials. He defends J.K. Rowling against being “canceled” over her transphobic remarks (which he deeply misrepresents), before saying, “I’m team TERF!”—the term for trans-exclusionary radical feminist, or feminists who are transphobic and do not believe trans women are women.

“Gender is a fact,” he reasons. “Every human being in this room, every human being on earth, had to pass through the legs of a woman to be on earth. That is a fact. Now, I am not saying that to say trans women aren’t women, I am just saying that those pussies that they got… you know what I mean? I’m not saying it’s not p*ssy, but it’s Beyond P*ssy or Impossible P*ssy. It tastes like p*ssy, but that’s not quite what it is, is it? That’s not blood. That’s beet juice.” (Chappelle’s anti-trans jokes have often boiled down to human anatomy, which shows how unnuanced his views are on the subject.)

Well who’s surprised at this point, wbk about his terrible views.

Also I’m sooooo fkin sick of people with huge platforms and audiences complaining about being “cancelled”!!! If you have been given free reign to express your opinions before thousands (or millions!!) of people, you are not being silenced in any damn way

Why can't they express their opinion about cis women struggles without trashing and humiliating trans women?

So disgusting

why can't trans people be proud of who they are? that's the main issue. you are trans because you transition to what you feel you should've been born as. but you are not the same as the ones who were born 'as'. it's not about being transphobic but i will be called a transphobic person most probably, well 100%, it's the fact that it's seen as hatred to say that trans people are trans people, there is nothing wrong with being trans... it's celebrated up until the point where u talk about trans people being trans people and u have to pretend they are "cis", but only transpeople can differentiate themselves from other categories, it's a very confusing ordeal. As for JK rowling she's a moron, her essay made zero sense and she made a fool of herself. I hope you guys understand what i'm saying. It's the fact u have to pretend that transpeople are not trans, they are cis, but then people diferentiate themselves from cis, but if you ever say you are trans, you are transphobic. But the same people who say they are proud of who they are but to me it seems you are not because you wanna remove everything that has to do with trans identity. It's a bit weird imo

Maybe by having a conversation with someone who is trying to understand the nuances of trans identity, instead of just leaving a hit and run negative comment that only strokes your own personal ego?
