There are more missing white women currently in this country than black women. The story caught national attention Due to the unusual nature of the boyfriend’s and boyfriend’s family’s behavior- then, he ran off. There was a huge search for her in Wyoming and there is a huge search for him in Florida. The story reaches across the country. This lady is just one of those people trying to make her agenda an issue. That's only because there are more white women in this country than black women. 13% of people in the US are black, but 34% of missing people are black. That's a significant disparity. on a three day bender

The fact that they aren’t even giving the family time to grieve and immediately bring up the “well she was white so of course she got attention” talking point. That’s belittling her case. Making it less than what it is. To joy it’s just “another missing white girl” case when it shouldn’t be just that. It should be a talking point about domestic violence can lead to things like this and how women and men can take actions to get out of bad situations. You're definitely painting those ideas onto her words, she never said that. I'm sure you could find some randos on twitter with that attitude, but that's not what's being said in this clip. The whole point of this is the very real and harmful empirically studied bias that exists in the media. And your reaction to it, or rather the way you're perceiving their words, shows the same bias imo. on a three day bender

I mean, there’s hundreds of TikTok videos and YouTube videos discussing this case, every major news media outlet is covering this case. And you wanna sit there and say that one news anchor voicing her VERY VALID opinion on this matter is belittling her case? Please. I would love for you to have the same energy you’re using on this woman, for the 710 indigenous women that have gone missing in the last year that literally no major news outlet has covered. The fact is that white women missing will always get more media coverage compared to women of color. I don’t give a **** about it being “the right time” to talk about this, because it’s always the right time to talk about the very drastic differences between how we treat white people and people of color in this country. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean it’s not the right time. The way I exactly knew this was gonna happen lmao. You realize belittling can happen at any scale right? Millions talking or one person talking, youre still able to belittle a case lmao. and I did say it’s a valid talking point, just NOT the right time to talk about it. There is a time to talk about stuff but when she was literally JUST found dead, not really a good time. MAYYYBBEE just wait a few days. Let the family grieve for a little bit Jesus Christ. Also yes, I posted for WEEKS about the indigenous people who went missing because, newsflash, IM NATIVE AS WELL. The fact of the matter is SHE GOT ATTENTION BC SHE WAS VLOGGING HER TRIP. Of course an ACTIVE influencer/vlogger/social media personality who is active that suddenly goes missing is going to stir a LOT of coverage. It’s almost as if…she had a following already? Who knew! Also as a POC myself I seriously hope you are as well bc if not, why are you even replying in the first place? You wanna go talk about to, go talk about it, but if you wanna let POC’s voice their opinion, then let us voice ours. K?

A social media personality who’s vlogging her trip and has a following and goes missing which causes her following and other people to question where she is qualifies as “white missing woman syndrome” okay gotcha. again it’s almost as if a mass amount of people were already aware of her existence before she went missing? This didn’t happen just because the media saw a white girl missing. She had a following. That’s how it started.
Roughhouse Dandy 13,612
A few things I have to say from this whole thread: 1) racial discrimination and inequity at their heart are not "political" topics. To reduce racial struggles to politics is dehumanizing. 2) she's right. 3) there's never going to be the "right" time to talk about this issue, so now is as good a time as any to start. ProfessionalClown 10,647
I really Hope nobody here has to go through what her family is going through just to have some random reporter/news anchor dwindle down their case to “missing white woman syndrome” when they literally just died. that’s all I gotta say. Have some decency and let the family grieve for at least a d*mn day.

It's an actual trend in media that has existed forever in this country. And as others have pointed out she didn't have a significant following prior to her disappearance not that it really matters either way. The term missing white woman syndrome was coined long before her and will exist until the disparity in news coverage is rectified. It's not a personal attack against her or any white person, it's just a phenomenon that exists in our society that needs to change. on a three day bender

I literally said, multiple times, that I agree with the talking point. I just don’t like how Joy went about bringing it up. Especially right now. she had 1k on Instagram and I’m pretty sure her vlogging her trip had at least some following so I’m assuming that a good chunk of people would’ve been in constant contact with her. She already had a good bit of people who knew her. She didn’t get attention just bc she’s white like others have, she got attention because a good bit of people reported it and shared their worries. the more people that get invested, the bigger the search is. It’s literally not belittling though, what is it actually taking away from Gabby’s case? NOTHING. A person with 1,000 subscribers is not worthy of nationwide news coverage when the scale of women of color going missing is far greater. The imbalance is a much more important topic in my opinion. No, I’m not a POC, but it doesn’t take a POC to recognize said imbalance. I’m speaking on the very obvious favoritism to white women and white people in general… something anyone can have a viewpoint and a discussion. I do apologize for not knowing you were a POC, and native as well. I figured this was an open discussion about a very real problem that is going on in this country and around the world. A conversation that everyone should be having regardless of race.

Right, but she isn't the first white woman to get this type of coverage while women who aren't white get none. The point isn't "this woman got more coverage because she's white", it's a reoccurring thing that goes far beyond this case. This is a rare opportunity to talk about an issue that otherwise wouldn't get attention from the masses. For a lot of people this is going to be their first time hearing about it and they probably wouldn't have heard about it if this case wasn't in the news. on a three day bender

That's fair. I just think it's kinda tactless to use her name and case as a springboard for the issue when her case isn't even closed yet. Like @Fresco said, it definitely would have been better, more constructive, and more well received to shed some light on actual current missing persons cases rather than to spin the whole "missing white woman syndrome" thing. It took literally one GGD page for people to start bickering, her approach isn't going to aide the national discussion around the issue which only hurts her, her point, and the people she's advocating for. When the discussion turns to those cases (as it should on a 24 hour news cycle), that's when she should call out the media's bias and continue to bring those other cases to light. Like many things, she's not wrong but it could have been handled better I can't imagine being Gabby's family and seeing that said when they still don't know exactly what killed her or where her boyfriend is. Just like I can't imagine how frustrating it must be to see her case get national attention while dozens of others are completely ignored. I think that's subjective. I personally think discourse and conversation is good even if it might not seem productive in the moment. The more people talking about the issue, the better imo. EDIT: To elaborate a bit more, I think that even if someone has a negative initial reaction to something it doesn't mean that their mind is made up forever. Seeds are planted with every discussion and people can evolve on issues over time. Conversely, no growth or evolution can occur when people aren't even aware of the issue. I remember when people (including a majority of the media) were saying "black lives matter" was too divisive a phrase. Even though there was tons of bickering over it, it ended up being a net positive. It planted the idea in peoples minds and they were able to evolve and rethink it overtime. Nowadays it's not even really seen as radical even though 5-10 years ago it was. on a three day bender
