The process of making a  "Designer Babies" just barely touch the real core of genome editing. These babies were basically filtered with the existing good genes known to man. The gene editing I'm referring to is the technology to mutate our genes and produce a superior trait. Kind of forced beneficial mutation. 

 

Like making our bodies 10x durable, eliminating the oxygen from our biochemical processes, etc. 

 

But this will involve a long series of inhumane experiments

I don't see the reason why it would be put in a zoo. In the article they cite environmental reasons as to why the company wants to 'revive' it, which is ''they want vitalize the region's grasslands as a major source of carbon sequestration''. If they will be successful, the baby elephants will be sent to reservations in Siberia. Also, ecosystems are ever changing. Mammoths populated most of the Northern Hemisphere before they vanished (due to hunting and climate changing). They don't need to eat this X species in this quantity, they will eat whatever plants they have available.
