When mammoths disappeared from the Arctic some 4,000 years ago, shrubs overtook what was previously grassland. Mammoth-like creatures could help restore this ecosystem by trampling shrubs, knocking over trees, and fertilising grasses with their faeces. Theoretically, this could help reduce climate change

It's a very fascinating thing science-wise but I'm not sure how it will translate irl. But then again I'm nowhere near an expert on the subject so.

Also I'm a little confused about the climate reasoning behind this because there are much more practical ways to fight against climate change but instead we'll just... rewild the Arctic tundra?

Idk I'm not really convinced with this whole process but it's gonna be cool to see the result I guess. 

Oh and didn't we have similar news years ago but nothing came out of it? I could swear I've heard of scientist bringing back extinct species when I was younger but nothing actually happened eventually.

So fascinating and I'm all for it but only if it's done right.

If reviving an extinct animal and reintroducing it doesn't risk the ecosystem of an area in the wild then I'd say go for it. Humans have caused the extinction of so many animals and it's nice to see that they might not be gone forever. I do think a mammoth is a bit extreme considering the climate change crisis and the fact that we can't/wont change for the animals already struggling.

I totally get that since its going to be reborn by using an elephant. Its gentetic makeup is gonna be mostly of a modern elephant right? Just little features like hair is what may be different?

It already involves human experimentation, really. Making "designer babies" is totally a thing we could do right now if the ethical debate wasn't being had

This specific company wants to create a baby elephant with altered mammoth-like genes. However, as far as I know, there are also attempts to create mammoths by mixing genes from preserved mammoths with genes of modern-day elephants.

There is no way to sequence dinosaur ADN, unfortunately, and we there is no dinosaur ADN left apart from a few tiny fragments. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/article/hints-of-dna-discovered-in-a-dinosaur-fossil (I know this because I actually made a thread when they were discovered in March 2020 ).

The only other way a dinosaur can be made is by activating archaic genes in birds, and this would only create an unexciting-looking and probably impaired chicken.

I strongly think we should resume at animals.. but who know what kind of experiments happen(ed) behind closed doors already.
