Ridley Scott's historical drama The Last Duel premiered yesterday on Venice International Film Festival, and the first reviews are out. The film stars Matt Damon, Adam Driver, Jodie Comer and Ben Affleck. Reviews have been mixed, as The Last Duel is currently holding a 63% approval on Rotten Tomatoes, second worst for the films premiered on Venice. On Metacritic, its score is a yellow 60/100.

Jodie Comer is getting rave reviews for her performance, as she shows off a powerful yet vulnerable character. The rest of the cast, though charismatic, don't add much to their characters. Technical aspect such as cinematography, soundtrack, costumes and make-up are also getting great reviews. However, critics are not happy with the film's running time (2 hours and 32 minutes), as they think the story feels lopsided and unwieldy.

The Last Duel will have a theatrical release on October 15, 2021, and it is one of Scott's two possible Oscar contenders, the other being biographical crime film House of Gucci, which will premiere on November 24, 2021, and stars Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Jared Leto, Jeremy Irons and Al Pacino.

Ridley Scott is no stranger to the crime genre, as he also directed American Gangster in 2007 and All the Money in the World in 2017. Both films received critical acclaim and snatched several award nominations.

Ridley Scott isn't really a director known for making one great movie after another. He has a few masterpieces. The rest are quite mediocre :bon:

I hope HOG doesn't turn out to be one of his misfires. :bear:

Although I'm sure Gaga will get acclaim for her acting :legend:

well Ridley is a hit or miss. I expected this one to be decent with a standout for Jodie Comer. It can still have a fine box office and be campaigned for awards.

Hopefully the same extents for Gucci if it's not critically acclaimed, and hopefully a better reception than Last Duel so Ridley is more focused on Gag's film :tony:

Ridley Scott made one great film in one decade. Mediocrity is the first word I think of his direction.

I hope he won't mess with HoG because we already knew the screenplay is good.

Umm, we really don't. The writer who wrote HoG has never written a screenplay before. :bear:

I know there's that article saying it doesn't have a bad scene but that's just one person's opinion.

Alien? Gladiator? Hannibal? Blade Runner? The Martian? Thelma & Louise? Even the directorial cut of Kingdom of Heaven was THAT good. Don't see "mediocrity".

I mean, this doesn’t mean anything for HOGs chances of being amazing, considering Ridley made Exodus: Gods and Kings before The Martian.

Every high profile actor wants to be involved in a Ridley Scott film, so the fact that Gaga had the opportunity to do so in her second feature film speaks volumes. Even if this is terrible, it shouldn’t do to much long term for Gaga.

House of Gucci’s screenplay writer Becky Johnston wrote the screenplay for The Prince of Tides, which was literally nominated for best picture at the Oscars :bear:

Edit: The prince of tides was also nominated for best screenplay at the Oscars :bear:

You're right, I forgot that there was Becky Johnston, I thought it was only Roberto Bentivegna.

Regardless if HOG gets mediocre reviews or not, if Gaga nailed her part she could still be up for an Oscar and the movie might still be a hit with fans and awards. RESPECT is also getting mixed to average reviews for different reasons but Jennifer’s part and the songs are definitely full of praise.

loool Who has the time or patience? Its ridiculous how lenghty filma are getting on average. Are they trying to create óperas? Pitty theres no metastasio in Hollywood.

anyway the trailer seemed Pretty indicative of these critics.  Imagine Jody expected a better outcome, at least shes being praised.
