For the 1x time in history, California has two packs of wolves with pups

A new report shows that for the first time in a century, California has at least two packs of wolves, reported World Animal News. 

“We’re over the moon knowing that for the first time in more than 100 years, California has at least two wolf packs with pups,” said Amaroq Weiss, senior West Coast wolf advocate at the Center for Biological Diversity.

One of the wolf packs in California regularly produces pups every year out, but this is the first time in over a century that two packs of wolves have birthed pups. Each pack has six new pups, which come to twelve wolf pups altogether.

These pups shine a ray of hope towards restoring California’s wolf population and helping them to thrive.

Idk why but for some reason I assumed there would be heaps of packs constantly having pups lol I didn't realise it was such a rare thing but then again I don't know a lot about wolves

In countries like Canada, Russia, Belarus, Turkey etc that must be the case but in most of the Western world wolves were hunted to extinction. This is why very smal progresses in countries US, Netherlands, France etc get a lot of coverage despite being relatively unimportant.

I think they were actually at one point extinct in California, & had been reintroduced. Or, it's possible wolves from bordering states with bigger populations migrated there and established the first pack!

Gray wolves are native to California, but disappeared in the 1920s. Most were likely killed through hunting or to control predation on other animals. In 2011, a gray wolf with a radio collar of OR-7 crossed the California border from Oregon and became the first wolf in the state since 1924, Fish and Wildlife reported.
