It’s not a bad album, but it ain’t good either. Skip for me. Sorry Antonoff, you need to stop using the pop gurls to further your own agenda:whitney:

I don’t think is Antonoff. It’s all Lorde. It’s her vision. He was just the facilitator. Look what he did with Folklore, Lorde was just stubborn with her vision. And we’ll, we got what we got. 😬

That's still ok for an album that is relying on just streaming and vinyl formats, no CDs. But pretty bad for an album that is the follow up to Melodrama.

The girls need to know the difference between "indie" artists and Alternative music as a genre. Lorde is an alternative pop artist. She's signed to a major label, so she's not nor has ever been "indie." There are plenty of alternative artists that have dominated the charts, from Alanis Morissette to Jewel.

Love Lorde, but flopping is flopping, period.

Lorde has never been a huge seller or even a big pop star? so makes sense to me lol wish it could do better/have future success. If Doja just got #1 then Lorde could in some weeks

Yeah people are forgetting Melodrama also underperformed

Considering she hasn't had a real hit since Team, is this a surprise? Also, who's going to buy an empty box just to get a download code? That obviously didn't work at all. She said she didn't want to be a popstar, and now she's gotten that.

The music box contains a 32 page booklet, posters, written notes, postcards, as well as the digital download + bonus tracks.  It's definitely not an empty box with a code. It also gives access to exclusive content that she's releasing over the upcoming months. If people didn't want it, it wouldn't have sold out within minutes of release on her stores. Anyway, the boxes weren't counted towards the BB charts because of the new rules.

Just a thought, I think that part of the reason there is such a big disconnect between Lorde and a lot of her fans with this album is because of the drastically different experience we've all had over the past five years. We lived in fear for four years with Trump in office and then as soon as that nightmare is ending, a literal pandemic happens and drastically changes most of our lives, leaving us prisoners of our own homes. Meanwhile, Lorde has literally been getting high by the beach in the tropical paradise that felt none of effects of the pandemic or the idea of nuclear war or getting her basic rights taking away. What I'm saying is, we're in different places mentally. We need music that makes us feel things; cathartic, dramatic, powerful music. At least I do anyway.

If there's anything I take away from SP its that its cathartic, a clean slate also dealing with returning home and to a more natural headspace.

After these past two years, I know I'm craving something lighter. SP gives me that.

Theres still space for dreamy acoustic driven pop music, not everything has to be strong and explicit.

Such bad timing for such an average album, who wants to listen to that after a pandemic

I like the album, but the problem is the 4 year break. The GP simply loses interests in artists very fast unless they constantly “stay relevant”.

Mhmm. If she wanted success (which she doesn’t LOL) this would be the big factor, to me. You capitalize off of your status as cool alt pop queen and do some features, singles, etc. then maybe a year off to work on an album.

That said, she doesn’t care about or desire to be a main pop girl so none of this matters. Good for her being in a space to release on her own terms

On that note, I actually like her more as a human who marches to the beat of her own drum and doesn’t just chase trends. She’s genuine with her intentions.

Been a cuff touple, a puff bupple, a tough couple of years.

I wholeheartedly don't understand the criticism toward this album. Everyone was open and in awe back when Taylor released folklore, an album that, let's be real, was a bit of a snooze fest, and we praised Lana who keeps releasing the same music over and over again, and suddenly we crucify Lorde for going in this direction? Her past work is still there for you to enjoy - if you want Melodrama so bad, go listen to Melodrama.

Also, what's with the argument of this not being something people want to listen to after a pandemic? Um, are we living on the same planet? Because after these shitty 2 years, I certainly don't want to listen to something dark and heavy, but maybe that's just me?

I really applaud Lorde for sticking to her guns and releasing the album she wanted to release. I think it's brilliant and different, I can't wait to see what she chooses to explore next. I'm also happy to see her being in such a light and positive place in her life, it hasn't always been that way. Can't wait to sit my ass on a beach in two weeks and listen to this record while I gently burn.

Also, iconic album cover.

I really think some people were just waiting for a chance to drag her lol
