Someone's selling a new album, so someone needs attention.. Technically she didn't say anything about gaga herself but she really should've just not said anything at all. Whatever. This old bitch is dead to me now :ohwell:

She's right. It's very similar to previous versions and in 2018 that is a bit redundant. However, it's not a dig on Gaga as she didn't write the script or direct.

I will say, that she could have threw in a positive comment about Gaga when the reporter tried to turn it around and ask "but it's a compliment to you right". A simple "but I enjoyed it" or "I loved the music" would have been nice lol.

ASIB was an acclaimed, Oscar winning pop culture moment that will most artists will never see. LM should be happy and not let comments like this get to us. She's entitled to her opinion and it wasn't even a drag towards Gaga.

It isn't redundant when a huge portion of the people who went to see ASIB didn't even see any of the previous movies or even know it was a remake.

When you have a huge superstar in the lead role it really doesn't matter if it is a remake or reboot. The last one was 40 years ago so that argument really makes no sense. ASIB 2018 had a huge superstar and a big movie star making his directorial debut. Very few people went into it even thinking about previous versions.

Ok but why does it seem like most people here are jumping to conclusions and are complaining about Barbra now ? Lol no wonder we can't discuss anything here. Y'all just start throwing sh!t to whoever doesn't kiss Gaga's ass 24/7. She's just talking about the differences between Judy's and her's and how her's and Gaga's are more similiar than she expected rather than changing up the story or scenarios in some way to make it a more original story. She loves Gaga and she liked this movie but that's just her honest opinion on the execution of the story.

Ma’am this is a Wendy’s

Well even though she is not personally attacking Gaga, she really is attacking her choice of being in the film and her artistic direction and performance overall.

Idk if this has been posted already, but this is a good excuse to post BeKindRewind's video comparing the 4 movies - her channel is great in general, highly recommend

I LOVE this freaking channel, I spent a good chunk of my time yesterday watching the Anne Bancroft's Oscar win and the Joan Crawford vs Bette Davis two part videos. It's a MUST wacth.

"INTEGRATED actors." (i.e., a MULTIRACIAL cast, like Will Smith and Bey). Different music genre (e.g., RAP).

That's all she said! Barbra would have preferred a multiracial cast and different music genre... She said the same thing in her 2018 interview with Variety!

"That's really interesting, really make it different again, different kind of music, INTEGRATED actors, I thought [Will Smith and Beyoncé] was a great idea." - The Project interview, 2021

"I thought when it was going to be done [with Beyoncé] it was going to be very different and have a MULTIRACIAL cast, and the music was going to be RAP. But it's more like the movie I made." - Variety interview, 2018

I'm not white and I agree with her to a certain extent. The next remake will likely feature a multiracial cast... You read it here first. 🙂

I don't think she's shading Gaga in any way, she's just sharing her view of the film.

It annoys me how much this fan base overreacts to the littlest things, it makes the situation 100X times worse.

I don't think Barbra is correct - BKR points out that one of the main changes in the 2018 version is giving the male lead context which imo resulted in a much better fleshed out and realistic portrayal of mental illness which I'm happy we got - this wasn't so much at the forefront especially in 1976 movie

Barbra wasn't dragging Gaga or Bradley, at all. She would have preferred a MULTIRACIAL cast and different music genre, but she said the 2018 version was a big success and she "can't argue with success."

I have not seen her version or Judy's so Gaga's version was new to me. 🙂 They're all remakes anyway, what's the big deal?? There's nothing new under the sun. HoG is based on a book, you know?

Barbra DID shade Beyoncé which I thought was uncalled for. "Well she first sang it once and, I didn't think it was good enough, actually, for her... and I know she did it over, and she did it beautifully the second time." (Beyoncé paid tribute to Barbra at the 2008 Kennedy Center Honors.)

EGOT2027

does anyone on here actually think that the way ally’s rise happens and plays out feels at all in line with popular music in 2021 or 2017? lol. and jackson maine is supposed to feel dated, but he comes across as an artist who would’ve already felt dated 15+ years ago.

what barbara is saying is spot on and an opinion many have discussed on here for years. it’s why the movie was so much more popular with 40-60 year olds than we thought it would be. i think the acting and singing and music is amazing but many of the directional and writing choices confuse/bug me…people on here have been saying similar things for years and none of them were ever banished for life lol. and most importantly, stuff like this never actually goes viral until our fanbase gets so defensive that it makes it viral (often leading to articles)

It sounds to me that through being into the idea of the Will/Beyonce collab is that Barbra wanted a version that was completely different from hers so hers would stand alone. Until that point, her version was the one that stood out and was the first version about full-time singers. With the 2018 version, it not only involved similar styles of music but in most ways seemed like her version but updated. Factor in that Gaga got nominated for an Oscar for acting which she didn't and the 2018 version winning an Oscar for its song (up until that point, the 1976 version was the only ASIB that had won an Oscar) and Barbra's maybe feeling a bit short-changed and like she's been kicked to the side. But ultimately, the versions are not that different. The original version and the 1954 version were also very similar and were set in the same kinda time period. Naturally, the 1976 version and the 2018 version were mirrored to an extent. Jack's story was the most detail in it, more than any male lead had previously and *spoiler alert* his death was by suicide, not by accidentally crashing a car while under the influence, which meant there was naturally a deep dive into mental health issues which wasn't present in the earlier versions. Also, keeping acoustic rock music present worked because it's a very timeless genre whereas if it centred around modern pop, it could become dated within as little as a decade. I think this was a big part of way Will and Beyonce doing an RnB version wouldn't have worked, I feel that genre has changed so much over time that their take on it today would easily sound dated before long and also, Beyonce isn't well-known for her acting abilities. I feel all the stars (no pun intended) aligned with the 2018 version and Barbra needs to accept that there's room for more than one take on her version. You can only create so much originality in a remake anyway. As Sam Elliot had stated, music is just the same chords played over and over but it's your interpretation that counts.

or what is the message of the end that the man had to die so that she could be born?? bc of course he couldn’t handle being married to someone more successful than him lol.

No, he committed suicide because he was suicidal. It's mentioned throughout that he had a long history of mental illness. For a lot of suicidal people, there isn't an actual reason why they have these feelings, or for them even to have a bad life. It's about chemical reactions in the brain and once it's set off, there's no talking them out of it. Yes, he was feeling like his problems were causing her to neglect her burgeoning career which contributed to him feeling like it would be better if he was out of the picture but we find out through his counselling sessions that he'd felt this inner torment for years. I felt the film did a great job of educating about the nature of suicide and how sometimes, it doesn't matter how a person's life is, there's nothing anyone else can do, they need to find the answer within themselves and sadly, not all of them do.

Gaga didn’t write the story. She took this opportunity she had to lift another woman artist up and just took it straight to negativity. I’ve lost a lot of respect for her.

And Paula Abdul ain’t got [BLEEP] on me!
