TikTok is to limit the direct messaging abilities of accounts belonging to 16 and 17-year-olds as part of a new wave of security features designed to protect younger users.

TikTok said a change to its privacy settings will see the ability to direct message others on the site turned off by default for those teenagers.

Users aged 16 and 17 will need to actively switch to a different sharing option, TikTok said, with the app also confirming it will now ask all users under 16 to choose who they would like to see a post before they publish their first video.

As part of the update, they will be able to choose to publish content to all their followers, only friends or just themselves.

TikTok said the changes are being rolled out “over the coming months” and have been created to enhance protections for younger users.

It's frightening how people use it as dating app when underage kids use the app too :neyde:

While I'm all here for this, we all know that teenagers will lie about their age, etc. And they do not see any danger in letting anyone see their videos because it's cool to gain followers.

The bottom line....Apps can do as much as possible to keep those underage secure (which they should), but parents have to monitor their children online. A middle/high schooler with a cell phone that is unmonitored is dangerous.

Good.

Kids have access to so much content today, and they're exposed to predators through these platforms.

They are doing this to mainly protect themselves from lawsuits, if there are ever cases like that going out. They will point that they have this "effort" so what happened with their users is out of their responsibility.

This new rule is only very minimal at actually protecting the minors, y'all Gen Z who already got IG and Twatter account when y'all under 17 know damn well that y'all lied with your age to get those accounts, (many of which are now suspended), it will be the same for Gen Alpha with their toktok, they will lie with their age to experience something edgier for their age.

Yeah, that's plain hypocrisy. Even when the account is obviously run by a child, they don't do anything...

I guess it just covers the company, as others have said, in the event anything lewd happens
