Yes, Italians speaking English sounds a bit softer.... Jared Leto REALLY overdid it with the R's and the thick accent, it almost sounds like a parody (It is shikkkkkkkka! FirekrrrrrakRRRR")

I believe they did that on purpose so that people laugh :ladyhaha:

I have noticed that every accent in Hollywood is Russian and not what they are actually trying to go for.

I don't know where they read that. I'm pretty sure any italian like me would agree she sounds a bit more russian than italian

After reading all the comments on this thread I feel pretty good about her accent! And just hoping the rest of the cast sounds good too since we didn't get to hear as much of them :enigma:

Because we use different criteria.

generally what foreigners don't know is that in Italy we have more than 20 regions and as many accents (and often even within them for each city the accent sometimes changes considerably)

What for Americans, for example, is an "Italian" accent is actually more of a Sicilian accent, or at least from the south, since for centuries Italian emigrants came from there.

For an Italian, what sounds "Italian" is not so much the phonetics itself (which, as I said, changes a lot for each region), but rather the tone, the intonation (what foreigners call "the melody of the Italian language"), the pauses, the lengthening of certain vowels or raising the tone of the voice to underline the importance of a word...

In this sense it is difficult to judge from the trailer alone, but it seems to me that Gaga has done a good job ("I don't consider myself..." part sounds "Italian" to my ears).

Italy borders Austria which borders Slovakia which used to be part of the Soviet Union in the 1980s which is when House of Gucci takes place, so I can see how Gaga took those influences and incorporated them into her performance.

Technically Slovakia used to be part of Czechoslovakia which itself was part of the Warsaw Pact, together with URSS and the other communist countries in Europe. :poot:

I think it’s actually not un common to mistake Italians for Russian when they speak English, However, my friend that lives in Italy said there’s many variations of accent, and when he speaks English he sounds Austrian. He’s from northern Italy. Re Gaga, he said sounds like the part of Italy that Patrizia R comes from and people just expect a mario style accent.

personally I thought in the first line she sounded a little Eastern European but I think with the setting and outfits etc she will sell the Italian accent. Also she sounded Italian to me on the rest of the trailer.

Stare at the Chartster in the mirror they talk to me too. #StreamFunTonight

I don't think it's amazing or so surprising if people can form an opinion based on accents. Many users here are international users who are able to speak or familiar with multiple Languages. On the contrary there are many that aren't able to notice small details as English is their first or only Language (they are the ones the movie seems to target so a not-so-great accent isn't a tragedy).
