No. It isn't. It is only for prestige. Movies are eligible to nominated and win Oscars in most categories as long as they had the one-week theatrical run in New York and Los Angeles between January 1 and December 31 of the previous year. So, the 2022 Oscars would cover films released between January 1 and December 31, 2021. That is why sometimes a lot of Oscars nominees are movies we never even watched or heard before the award ceremony started, because they only did last minute limited release in these two cities only to be eligible.
