Teletubby 150,599
Lala Kent opened up on David Yontef's Behind the Velvet Rope podcast about how she believes Demi Lovato's song "California Sober" is "extremely offensive" to those on the road to recovery. Lala, who is sober since October 2018, discussed how she took issue with song "California Sober", which centers on the lifestyle of allowing some alcohol and marijuana while avoiding hard drugs. Lala Kent said : "You know, I don't like to judge, but I actually think that that's super offensive," "There are people out there who have worked their ass off to never take themselves out of reality and to never place themselves in an altered state. When they have a cold, they don't even take DayQuil or NyQuil. So to say that you're 'California sober' or this type of sober is extremely offensive I think." "To me, I've been in rooms with men and women who have given up everything just to not pick up... So sober to me means that you are not taking yourself out of reality," Kent described the idea of being "California sober" as "not a real thing. "You're not sober. If you're drinking and smoking weed, you're not sober." source "You b*tch!" ~ Rat Boy

Lilbit 1,596
I have no experience with addiction, but when I first heard Demi talk about the song I had similar thoughts. It can be hard for pop stars to express their feelings/emotions without influencing the public in controversial ways. To be fair I’m sure Demi mentioned California sobriety being their journey, and that others shouldn’t follow what they see.

weed 74,262
I think given Demi literally overdosed, they can cope in their own ways. Maybe offensive to some, that's perfectly fine as well lol everyone is living their own lives.
littlepotter 75,147
I think it's offensive that she's trying to gatekeep sobriety... Go off girl good for you but for someone who literally overdosed being off hard substances is already a good place to be. chaeri pls

JgHaus78 1,981
I’m usually the first hater to jump on the Demi hate train on this cult site, no shame here. But who cares how they choose to handle their sobriety especially when they’re not hurting anymore. Some people have different experiences with addiction and sobriety. Smoking marijuana and drinking socially will mostly likely never kill you, but do you know what definitely will? Heroine, even on the first try. I’ve seen a lot of friends die from an overdose and a lot of other friends that haven't touched heroine since they quit. People need to learn how to mind the business that pays them. Judging other peoples sobriety on an empty stomach through a cracked phone screen!!! I could never. Demi, you deserve better that's all, bye.
ToxicHot 6,444
Oh wow, a news report where someone is actually complaining about Demi rather than it being the other way around. Well, anyway, “California sober” IS a real thing. You can, for the most part, safely consume marijuana (or any form of THC) because it’s legal and has been proven to be less damaging than alcohol. Obviously you can still form an addiction to it, but generally speaking the effects aren’t as severe as any other street drug. gagawaffles 165
As someone who wasn’t so close to the point of death requiring ECMO and having subsequent strokes, I don’t feel like I’m allowed to dictate what is or isn’t sobriety. I know people who were able to quit narcotics with weed. I’d rather they smoke weed for pain than be addicted to a medicine that can def kill you if you OD
