She also changed IWBWY to Dope to go against the label, they loved IWBWY and wanted to make it a single. Thank you. Also, isn't the "much better original Venus demo" identical to the album version except from the vocal harmonies?
pIasticdoll 21
It's catchy but I wouldn't really call it "art." It didn't really push any boundaries musically or visually and the music doesn't evoke any strong emotions that you wouldn't get from other edm. It's an okay album but she only set herself up to get dragged with the naming and pretension throughout the era. Referencing actual works of art in your music doesn't make the song artistic, at least not to people that can genuinely appreciate art.
NewUsername 11,043
The things she did around the music: artRAVE, the Louvre exhibition, the Jeff Koons sculpture, wearing Mona Lisa etc. were more ARTPOP than the music itself.

I think she originally intended for the album to span different genres but the whole thing got produced by an EDM producer so her ideas were all diluted. Manicure was a rock song with a hip hop beat. The original Venus demo is super subdued. I Wanna Be With You was really personal and we got a shouted song about drugs instead. I honestly think this album was missed potential and Gaga and her label had very differing ideas of what the album should have been. I think Fashion! is the best example of what happened with the album and is the greatest expression of the tension between Gaga's artistic control and the pressures of her label. In this particular case, the song is excellent (one of my favorites), but that's not the case with the vast majority of the album, where outdated, noisy EDM and songs recorded over pre-designed, ready-to-use tracks (I find this most insulting of all) ended up winning the day. Fans are still attached to ARTPOP for what it evokes in them personally, for what it could have been or for what they represent it was, but the truth is that it was a failed album forced by a label that interpreted BTW as some kind of "flop" (for Gaga's initial standards) and sought to extract as much profit as possible from her and her work. Not sure what you mean about Fashion! Do you think she didn't want to work with them but was forced to? Why do you find existing instrumentals insulting? I've often wondered if after Stache she liked the idea of working with an existing beat but as far as I remember isn't it just Donatella and half of Aura done this way? Mary Jane Holland is a grey area because people said her guitar player is still heard in CBTM which would mean Gaga worked on it before that demo leak. The Chromatica process is similar in a way if she had no hand in the final production and they played the tracks to her after a number of producers re-worked it

MadreMonster 2,584
I think the whole thing is not that it’s artistic pop but that art is infused within pop music. Just like pop art is pop culture infused in art.
flyaway 15,350
ARTPOP... Not really an "art-pop" type of music. It's actually a rock, trap, r&b, techno, house, synthpop, electropop influenced EDM album . I wanted to emphasize because the argument some ARTPOP critics have about the album in general is that it's an EDM generic album (Let's think for instance David Guetta, LMFAO,...). But it's far from that. It's a well thought album is a well thought work. The problem is that it had a poor execution.
