New York has become the first US state to declare a disaster emergency order to address rising gun violence.

New York state saw 51 shootings over the 4 July holiday weekend.

Governor Andrew Cuomo  signed two laws into effect on Tuesday.

One "public nuisance liability" law makes it easier for civilians to bring lawsuits against gun makers and dealers. Manufacturers have been largely exempt from liability by federal law, which the New York law will circumvent.

The second is designed to prevent those wanted for crimes from being able to acquire a weapon.

Cuomo also announced $138 million of investment towards gun violence intervention and prevention programmes.

"If you look at the recent numbers, more people are now dying from gun violence and crime than COVID," Cuomo said in a press release.

"This is a national problem but someone has to step up and address this problem because our future depends on it," he added.

There's so much that needs to be done and so much that can actually be done.

This is great that he's taking a step to curb gun violence but we need more real legislative action. Banning bump stocks, high capacity magazines and assault weapons, national firearm registry, federal gun/ammo buyback program, required mental health examinations, more stringent background checks are some of the ways that we can seriously curb gun violence but so many of our politicians care more about lobby $$ than human lives. At least the NRA its on it's very last limb of life.

And what about the other states, what are they waiting for? More shootings in the meantime? :flop:

I don't understand this world. Climate warming is starting to manifest but nothing changes. Shootings keep happening, but no one moves a finger. Everyone waits for more disaster. It's like there needs to be a literal apocalypse for change to happen. There needs to be so many dead people to realize there is a problem.

We're set up for extinction I fear :rip:

We're set up for extinction I guess :rip:

Because that require a lot of politicians to care more about human lives than the $$ from gun manufacturers and oil executives on both sides. Not to mention that we have a major party that has convinced itself that mass shootings are somehow a perfectly normal thing.

I don’t think they’d even do anything in an actual apocalypse. A worldwide pandemic has been going on for almost 2 years and you’ve seen the response to that. :smh:

Can't believe we're just now seeing some action being taken, after thousands and thousands of shootings, and even then I'm sure only a few other states will follow suit and not much will actually be done.

Americans are just not ready to give up their f*cking guns :saladga:
