French champagne group slams Russian ‘sparkling wine’ label law

France has hit back at a new Russian law ordering French champagne makers to label their bottles as sparkling wine.

France has strict rules protecting its bubbly, meaning to be called champagne it must be from the French region that shares the name.

Under Russia's new law, only local producers can use  "shampanskoye" - the Russian equivalent of champagne.

The new law, signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, requires all foreign producers of sparkling wine to describe their products as such on the back of the bottle.

French producers are still allowed to use the word champagne on the front of bottles, but the use of "shampanskoye" is allowed only on local produce.

France's main champagne industry group called the law "unacceptable".

The French champagne industry group called on its members to halt all shipments to Russia for the time being and said the name "champagne", which refers to the region in France the drink comes from, had legal protection in 120 countries.

The group is LVMH and this is truly normal as they sell the best champagne (or sparkling wine) brands like Roederer or Dom Perignon and they can reach 10000€ per bottle. Moreover champagne is only from France and produced in the champagne county. Sparkling wine calling definitely lower the value of the product.
