Isn't the issue not so much his use of the term as much as it is the implication that people of Latin descent would all be at risk of being deported, when most are in the US legally?

There's quite a few ways someone who's here legally could be screwed over by our broken system and kicked out.

Moving without providing the USCIS with your new address within ten days.

Committing a crime that a judge may call "moral turpitude" (usually related to smuggling but it could be anything like drug possession or a domestic dispute that becomes violent, it depends on the judge and a lot of courts seem to have a bias against hispanics and latinos).

Being a drug addict or distributor. No court filing is needed, an admission or medical test is enough to deport someone.

Becoming a "public charge" (collecting any kind of assistance) can get a green card holder deported.

If you assert that you're a US citizen but actually aren't, you can be deported unless you can reasonably prove that you actually believed you were a citizen, even then a court has to be satisfied with your answer.

Just a few I know of, I think these are pre-Trump too. God only knows what he's f*cked up that Biden hasn't been able to unf*ck yet. You can apply to challenge this stuff in court but even then, you can be f*cked there too. It's much safer to call zero attention to yourself until you can become a full US citizen instead of just a legal resident.

Oh yes, I'm aware of that, having many people close to me who are in the US on visas or green cards. I guess I meant the implication that being "Latinx" is automatically equated with being an immigrant or "other," when there are many , many people who fit that term who are US citizens. However, I do think I understand what he was trying to say––he's just not very eloquent with his words.

I identity as Latinx (and I use Latine too) and it's really cool to see the term used by the president. It may not be perfect but i see it as progress. Also wtf not all Latinx are here with fear of deportation man come on

It's called dementia sweaties, clearly someone told him not to use this term and he mistook it for a term on his list of trend words to remember :huntyga:

I personally prefer the use of an e at the end instead of the x, the use of an e for gender neutral terms is becoming an accepted thing here in Mexico and it’s actually possible to pronounce…
