Here in Mexico, for example, it happens in telenovelas, TV series, etc. Most of the protagonists are light-skinned.

Literally not what's happening here. In Mexico they cast Gabriel Soto

Because Gabriel Soto is the definition of white passing. There isn't anyone in this movie that passes for white.

I’m sorry but this may sound rude, but Latin representation that looks like me is FAR LESS than African American, Afro Latin, and in general dark skinned POC’s. Let’s us have a damn movie for once

Call me racist if you want I don’t give a single damn but Latin people that look like me (brown skinned but not dark skinned or light skinned) barely get ANY representation and if we do it’s a stereot

The way that actual latin people, especially Mexicans, are calling her out rn. Apparently representation only matters for dark skinned people in the community. As someone who is brown but not dar

I still can’t believe people are saying Jimmy Smits is “white passing”. Like-

have they seen a white person?

thats the issue... dark skinned characters are seemingly always pushed to the back (or made out as villains)

There’s one dark skinned main character, one dark skinned minor character, many dark skinned dancers, and multiple shades in the main cast from light skinned to medium as well.

question, have you actually seen the movie.

Yes. And I am Latino.

And my statement is a fact regardless of  the information I just gave you.

You being represented and others being done a disservice are not mutually exclusive.

There is so many Chinese Carribean people too. In a minority movie does every minority have to be represented. Also that isn't the point. I do think there needed to be more Black Carribean representation in the leads. But to use an incendiary phrase like "white passing" when literally maybe like one person is white passing in the whole movie makes an otherwise valid point sound like it was made up only to go viral.

Okay so every single kind of Latino needs to be in it. Why wasn’t there a white lead character then? Or even a white minor character? Or Filipino because many Filipinos consider themselves also hispanic due to the history between the Philippines and Spain? Or natives? Or since Latin encapsulates Latin speaking languages let’s further the idea and include Italians and French speaking or descendant people?

Can we not at least have a little bit of a win here? There were dark skinned people in the movie. There were also some light skinned and medium skinned people. The entire movie shouldn’t cater to just one audience.

Do you know what accuracy means? People don’t feel the movie represented Washington Heights accurately.

Period. It has nothing to do with other Latinos.

There is a literal black man with a lead role. This has everything to do with Latinos.

Like what?

It was based on what Lin experienced in Washington Heights when he went there. That was his experience and made a play about it.

That black man is not even Latino in the movie :rip:

Benny does not speak Spanish.

Also note: In the actual musical Nina’s father does not accept Benny in part due to colorism.

They completely took that out of this movie.

You are mentioning everyone except the Afro-Latinos. They aren’t asking for EVERYONE to be represented. They are asking for a more accurate Afro-Latino casting choice.

Not difficult to comprehend.

I mentioned everyone else because you already mentioned Afro-Latinos.

again this was from HIS EXPERIENCE before 2005. I don’t even know when he went to Washington heights (presumably 2004 or before) so the characters were already there.
