Billionaires Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos paid zero federal income tax some years, according to a trove of secret IRS records.  The confidential IRS records from the 25 wealthiest people in the United States were obtained by ProPublica and published on Tuesday. 

It show that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos paid no income tax in 2007 and 2011, while Tesla founder Elon Musk's income tax bill came to zero in 2018. Investor George Soros went three straight years - between 2016 and 2018 - without paying federal income tax, according to the records.  


Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos paid a true tax rate of 0.98% as his wealth grew by a staggering $99 billion between 2014 and 2018; he reported $4.22 billion in reported income during the same period.

Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla, saw his wealth balloon by $13.9 billion between 2014 and 2018, he reported $1.52 billion in income and paid a true tax rate of 3.27%.

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett, an advocate of higher taxes on the rich, saw his wealth grow by more than $24 billion from 2014 to 2018 and paid a true tax rate of 0.10%

Overall, the richest 25 Americans pay less in tax — 15.8% of adjusted gross income — than many ordinary workers do, once you include taxes for Social Security and Medicare, ProPublica found.

An anonymous source delivered to ProPublica reams of Internal Revenue Service data on the country’s wealthiest people, including Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, Rupert Murdoch and Mark Zuckerberg.

Not surprising. That tax code is broken. I don't get how the rich pay 0 taxes and still get tax laws written to pay even less taxes. 

You know there is a tax break where if you owe the government taxes you can buy property with that money owed and not pay those taxes. The tax code is broken it favors the rich and the rich only.

It's just mind-boggling to me how filthy rich people don't want to pay taxes. It's not like they can't afford it. And it's even more mind-boggling that the system actually enables them but then will go after people with low income who are struggling to make ends meet

I just don't understand how the taxes work...i mean either they don't declare their profits or the system allows this? Like for real! Even guys like Ronaldo or Messi or more recently Sakira had the court deciding the amount of money they need to pay because money they didn't declare ( if I'm not mistaken some was a few years back even). How does that work for these guy's? When they are so public! And so rich you would think that the taxes authority would have them under some scrutiny... (Unless of course there's corruption here)

There are so many ways the system can be abused in every country, they wont change it bc then the rich people will lose money and power

Yep, I usually get tax back from the government every year bc I'm so poor. This past year, where I was unemployed from February to midway through July, I owed $1200 somehow.

Shakira was living in Spain but didn't pay any taxes there. She falsely claimed to live in Bahamas from 2012 to 2014 where taxes are lower. She was never seen in Bahamas. She was almost all this time with her boyfriend in Spain, she was many times photograped there and also gave birth to their first son.
