Yeah…it’s not new here. This site is slowly becoming a gay Parler.

It’s usually the same ones who think having a “racial preference” when choosing sexual/romantic partners is not inherently racist :ladyhaha:

Celebrities request specific photographers, make-up artists and stylists all the time, often working with their own team or a combination of theirs and the magazines. Even a publication like US Vogue has had to cave to these demands in recent years, when once they never would have done. It's funny how it's only ever a problem when a black artist does this, particularly when her intentions are to give black creatives an opportunity .

Some people really turn themselves into knots trying to find an issue where there isn't one. White photographers shoot probably more than 95% of covers and adverts. Vanity Fair only used a black cover photographer for the first time last year, US Vogue a few years ago with Beyonce and British Vogue in 2018. It's far too simplistic to say "ShE oNlY wAnTs To UsE ThEm BeCaUsE tHeY'rE bLaCk" when really it's about giving opportunities to black talent that are still really scarce. And it shouldn't matter if the talent she requested is established or not.

It's so funny to read through this thread and see her both being dragged for "daring" to ask in the first place and also being chastised for not doing more e.g. "I'd be ok with it only if she was picking an up-and-coming black photographer." Anything to create a dialogue about reverse discrimination, undermine the talents of black creatives and run with this scarcity narrative as if there isn't more than enough work to go around for everyone. Most magazines put out 12 issues a year, maybe with 5-10 editorials and features each issue; one artist requesting one feature to be shot by a black creative is not discriminating against anyone.

Making the effort to diversify your talent pool isn't hiring someone for the sake of the colour of their skin, it's actively working against a racial bias that shouldn't exist. There is an abundance of poc talent and it's astounding reading some takes that try to contextualise the success of black photographers as only being because they're black.

OK but at what point does hirings based on race stop? Should black people just hire black creatives, Asians hire Asians, white people hire white? I understand that she wants to give people opportunities but is that the standard for her now? Only black photographers?

I'd also like to hear the magazine editors POV. It's so easy to throw these viral tweets out, everyone rants and rages and seeks out the company to get the cancelled it or pressured into apologising. I used to be one of those people who just blindly believed every tweet like this without thinking I should hear both sides. Artists caht always call the shots.. Unless your majorly A list you can't really expect to get everything you want and sorry but SZA is not at that level.

These comments seem to imply she's acting like a diva or making unreasonable requests. She's not asking for champagne and red M&Ms. She's asking for diversity.

Does that make her demanding?

Literally no one is saying that. It's so frustrating how these things get turned on their head like this and people start using hyperbole, making assumptions and creating made-up future scenarios to derail the conversation from the original point. There are more than enough opportunities to go around for all photographers.

A black artist using her moment and her power to collaborate with a fellow black creative in a world that is dominated by white talent is not taking anything away from anybody else, nor is it setting a precedent that only certain races can work with each other. Black, white and asian artists and photographers shoot together all the time and always have done. SZA doing her part to diversify the talent a magazine works with is not some big act of segregation, and it's so myopic to suggest that.

That's not what I said at all. I even said I understood why she's doing it. I asked at what point do these specific race requests stop. And is a general rule needed where black artists should automatically get a black creative team.

Its not hyperbole. Its a legitimate  question. So are you saying that next cover she does she will be cool with an Asian or white photographer? Because she seems pretty passionate about giving black creative these opportunities. Should other magazines now be prepared to be called out if they do not give in to requests for creatives of a certain race (and that can include white people asking for a specific race too)

Im trying to see things from both sides, which doesn't tend to happen often in these heated viral tweets.

OK so in that case maybe she is going to request only black creatives from now on. Thanks for answering!!

I agree that making positive steps to diversification is something to be celebrated. But I don’t think artists no matter who they are should dictate to the magazine and then kick up a fuss when they don’t get what they wanted. If you disagree with the editor’s choice of photographer and they are not prepared to compromise then decline to take part in the shoot.
