What if MTN was the first single off BTW?

After learning the new information that was revealed on The Me You Can’t See last night, I decided to watch Marry The Night for the first time in a while. It’s still such an iconic film that was totally overlooked due to her overexposure and being the 5th and last single. It got me to thinking- what if they released it as the first single off BTW with the same music video and all? Picture it: it’s early 2011 and the last single we had was Alejandro about a year ago. Could you imagine if MTN was the first sound people heard off of her highly anticipated sophomore effort? With it's church bell electronic vibe, I feel like it would have been divisive, but her diehard fans would have eaten it up so hard and still shot it to number 1 like BTW. Especially having the first visual of the album being some exploding cars as she is sliding down windshields in the rain....that would have been 10x more iconic especially as her way of saying she’s back with a new album. Would have been insane! Anyway, enjoy some MTN gifs for your viewing pleasure.

I still like BTW as the first single even if I prefer MTN as a song. But it should have been picked over Judas as the second single and then Hair.

Born This Way was the perfect lead single for the era and it’s an iconic one. I don’t think Marry The Night would have been #1 for 7 weeks straight.

Oh no, I didn’t mean this as a slight to BTW. I think BTW was the right way to start off the era. I’m just asking about your thoughts on what it would have been like had MTN been chosen as the lead single instead. Alternate universe.

It will still debut #1 but I think things will be a little bit different for us in the LGBTQIA+ community righ now  I think the BTW single choices and order were perfect, just a need a little bit bump for increase in sales but it was harder to get higher spots back then.

I would have picked it as the second single honestly, or maybe third after The Edge Of Glory. But I see what you mean also, as an artistic choice maybe yes, as a commercial one, I think BTW was the best pick.

Gaga waned it to be the first single but she went with btw cause she thought it would set up the album better. At the time i think she called it the “gateway drug” into the album. Idk if a lot of people remember but btw was pretty divisive when it was released. A lot of fans felt it was too literal and almost cheesy pop. Also all her singles up until this point started in minor keys- it just felt different from what we were use to gaga serving up. I think mtn would’ve pleased the fans more and maybe would’ve had less backlash from the gp (plus it’s the better song) but btw was the right choice. Either way, there was no way a gaga lead wouldn’t go #1 for multiple weeks at the time. She was too powerful

It's favourite song but not too much strong for lead single! I thing it  could debuted at no1 but not for 7 weeks as BTW did!
