It’s not just about dying... most of these nations are trying to work towards herd immunity. And a lot of the money is coming from the taxpayers dollars that citizens themselves pay. So it’s only logical that people expect to be vaccinated regardless or their risk of dying because getting COVID has life-long consequences. 
 

I am hoping that once these countries are done vaccinating their populations they donate the rest to developing nations!

And a lot of these rich countries such as Canada donated millions to Covax to help get vaccine doses to the poorer countries. Canada gave Covax $700M to help get covid vaccines to poor countries.

Obviously, we really can't blame richer countries for prioritizing their own vulnerable populations, especially when they had invested heavily in the vaccine candidates early on. 

But the major gripe people are having with the US and the UK specifically (the only two vaccine producing countries who haven't exported a single dose, well until the US exported some like yesterday) seems to be with:

1. Antivaxxers and younger people not getting vaccinated fast enough so the rest of the world can have some earlier.

2. Big pharma successfully lobbying the two countries to keep the intellectual property behind the vaccine secret, so only they can produce it. With the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine, Oxford University actually wanted to share the blueprint with everyone so it can be produced in lots of places to make it as plentiful and accessible as possible, but Boris Johnson's Conservative Government didn't like that. In their investor calls, big pharma executives have been gushing about how Covid-19 is probably gonna end up being endemic like the seasonal flu and how everyone is going to need booster shots every year or so and how they will jack up the prices and revel in the windfall. If they shared their IP behind the vaccine, they wouldn't be able to make those sweet profits, right? And those profits are apparently worth the millions of deaths that would happen as a result.

3. The US still sitting on something like 60 millions doses of the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine when it's clearer than day that they're so not going to need it. It's like they had to be 110% sure they weren't going to need it before dispatching it abroad. You'd think Biden would be better, but he's just as America First as Trump is. Compare that to India, who had donated millions of AstraZeneca doses to lower income countries (which reached those populations even before the WHO-sanctioned Covax) right before they were hit with the current deadly wave. They could have saved literally millions of lives if they kept the doses to themselves.

4. Richer countries leading the world with vaccination numbers now focusing on vaccinating children who are virtually at no risk whatsoever from the virus. It's a sad world when you prioritize vaccinating children just to feel good, over unimaginable human sufferings among the world's least privileged. We all know that the pandemic won't be over until it's over everywhere. If you're not worried about what's happening down in Sub-Saharan Africa because those Africans and you are not even gonna cross paths anyway, doesn't that give you Apartheid/Segregation America vibes? When Israel is discussing inoculating their children just so that Netanyahu can get more political points, when Palestinians just a stone's throw away are dying, but it's OK because they and their sufferings are kept separate from ignorant bliss in Isreal—is that a world we want to live in?

And I just wanna say that the problem with many lower-middle and low income countries isn't so much that they don't have the money to procure the vaccines, they do—they're just not able to get them before fall or winter of 2021, until when millions would have to die. Covax and all those international goodwill schemes are a ****ing joke.

And I just wanna add that diplomatic philanthropy is just as bad and phony as billionaire philanthropy. The supposed "billions" that richer countries donate to poorer countries is not only small potatoes, but also nothing more than a ploy to distract people from how richer countries still to this day continue to exploit the resources of poorer countries at great costs to the local populations' democracy, culture, stability, independence and environment. You don't even wanna get me started on the receipts.

Even if I agree that the goal is obviously an economic one, the first part of your response is not true. Especially at the moment most people who get hospitalized are young people and they are dying too. Sure not in the same amount older people did without the vaccine but saying that young people aren’t at risk in no shape or form is untrue. Also you should read articles about Long Covid and the effects it can have on your life after having covid. You could have life long problems. So even if I obviously hate to see that rich countries get so many compared to poorer you can’t just ignore the fact that the virus is dangerous in general, no matter the age!

that article is from November 2020  besides, mRNA vaccines are a) more expensive, b) are already a challenge logistically for developed countries since they require massive cooling and c) countries like China have developed their own vaccine so they dont need to buy Pfizer's

I heard the same statistic on tv and when i searched it, it came up near the top. I had no idea the article was that old i didnt notice
