She, along with Shirley Manson, Alanís Morrisette, Courtney Love and others, made it cool to be angsty again. I'd also say—and I don't mean this as a knock on the others as I'd say most have great vocals—that Fiona vocally outclasses the rest by a lot. I love Lana, Lorde, FKA Twigs, Kate Bush, Grimes, etc. but I do appreciate when a singer has that vocal "oomph" that can put them over other strong vocalists. You have some artists whose voices are seriously damaged by addiction issues and others who still so great or even better than they were at a younger age (Willie Nelson, etc.) despite struggling with addiction. Cause I don't really know KB and FA were alternative. So I'll choose Billie I guess. Is Billie who doesn't really fall under the alternative label. Not Kate Bush or Fiona Apple because they actually are the pioneers of this genre.
