I agree that you cannot have a referendum to leave every few years BUT the UK is literally a union of 4 nations. It is presumably a union which was based on giving each nation equal rights and power in this "shared power" type of system. If one of the nations decides to leave it should totally leave and be allowed to do so. Not only is it democratic BUT it is also the promise given to each nation within the union. Equals means you have to allow the other nations within the union to decide their fate. I do agree though that a referendum should not be happening every couple of years. It should be done however every 10 years at the minimum imo. Of course for special occasions though perhaps a 5 year gap or something? idk...either way a set frame should be given.

The “once in a lifetime” is not legally binding, they were mention of it in the Edinburgh Agreement or in the Smith Commission. The UK Scotland voted to remain in 2014 is totally different than the one we have in 2021.  I’m a democrat as I am believe that the will of the people should always be respected. 

This is why the MP said if there was another referendum, there must be a cool off period until another can be called.  We can’t keep on having referendums.

I’m in agreement, I just don’t think the article and this thread being titled “Scotland should legally be forced to remain in the union says Tory MSP” is a true reflection of what he said.  He’s calling for a cool down period if another referendum happens, which all of us here, including the OP agree with.

We can flip the script and feel sorry for the unionists who keep stating they wish to remain but keep on having their vote overturned because of the SNP.

The UK is a union of countries, in opposition of the US which is a union of states. If anything, the UK should be closer to the EU than the US if you want to make an analogy, and that would make the member states free to leave if they wish. They can remain in the Commonwealth as a compromise, idk

I agree, Indyref2 will be the last chance for us to get Indepedence.

What do you mean that doesn’t mean sh*t?  You are a part of the United Kingdom yet your vote, because you live in Scotland carries more weight than mine.  You also get more taxes sent your way... I don’t think the Scottish realise how good they have it.

This is why there’s a running joke in England that if Scotland wants to get a leave vote, they should ask England because the general mood is that Scotland doesn’t pull her weight, gets more given to her and yet still isn’t happy.  Good luck to her if she gets in the EU, as said, they will Greece y’all

You just don’t get it. England’s MPs outvotes Scotland, no matter what vote it is. Same with elections, no matter what election it is, England’s voice is more important than ours. That is no fair. Scotland voted to remain in the EU - 62% because mostly England voted to leave the EU we were dragged out. Scotland deserves better than this Far right corrupt Brexit Britain.

It tells you the “union of equals” simply doesn’t work. England doesn’t listen to us. We voted against Trident, we get Trident. We voted against welfare reforms, we get welfare reforms. We voted against Brexit, we get a hard Brexit. No matter what, English MPs out votes us. If you did the maths, you’d understand.

We are a union of people’s, you literally get more of a say than someone else in this union.  I don’t know what’s not clicking, you literally have a union of countries giving you more money, more of voice yet you want to leave for the EU?  Honestly, good riddance tbh.  I hope we put up a hard border, gonna need to do something to stop the mass flow of people into England

Why does England always get what it wants then? It should be a “union of equals” not England with 3 other countries tagged on. Every single country in the EU gets a say at the table, no matter what country it is. Every single country has a veto over everything. Obviously you don’t understand what you talking about.

Because we are the United Kingdom and there are more people living in England.  In fact despite that as said above, Scottish voters still get a stronger vote and more money spent on them!?  If you want equality across the Kingdom, you would get LESS.
