they are rappers, they would be the new Nicki, Iggy, why not pick singers instead?

it’s a pretty clear comparison, the genre isn’t important.

rap is obviously way bigger than it was ten years ago, there was only one popular female rapper at the time. meg, cardi, and doja are three of the biggest artists in the industry right now, and they’re obviously compared because they’re in the same field. the same way gaga, katy, and kesha were. kesha’s the doja because they both took a while to blow up, and they’re probably the weakest success-wise of the three (so far). cardi’s the katy (came out the gate with hits immediately, everything she does turns to gold), and megan’s the gaga (a cultural phenomenon, hitmaker, and boundary pusher)

nice points! but I still associate Cardi with Gaga, since I feel like with her breakthrough she opened the doors for female rap the same way Gaga reintroduced dance / electronic pop to the masses :vegas:

I mean Nicki was there before, of course, but she always felt more like a hybrid act leaning heavily on pop /dance music, while Cardi truly opened the floodgate of pure female rap imo.

I would actually argue that 2014-Nicki ushered in the era of pure female rap. Pinkprint was all Rap/R&B bangers and I always felt that it made it possible for Cardi to breakthrough the way she did.

I respect your opinion, but I don't want to give Nicki that since she tried all the cards in her sleeve to stop Cardi (and probably other new female rappers too) from happening.

had she been decent to Cardi, I would have supported your kind of ideas more.

I get what you mean, but that's kinda like saying that you won't acknowledge the obvious influence and barrier-breaking that Madonna did for Gaga just because she said some rude things about her.

Well that's sort of part of the bigger issue, isnt't it? I believe we shouldn't reward people who try to hinder other people's growth.

But i don’t really see it as rewarding, but rather acknowledging context.

using my previous example, it would be factually incorrect to say that Madonna didn’t pave the way and influence Gaga, even if she is guilty of undermining her as an artist. I truly think it’s a very similar situation with Nicki and Cardi.

Was Kesha even that successful? People always throw around these superlative words for everyone nowadays. I only know Tik Tok and Timber.

As for Meghan and Doja, it's too soon to say anything.

Music wise, Katy always made bland music, especially in the early 10s when she was huge just like Cardi is doing now lol (with some exceptions for both) . I'm still surprised how such a bad song like her latest one reached the top.

Kesha was alllll I heard from 2009-2012ish. TikTok was a massive hit. She was very big, obviously not as big as Katy or Gaga.

Seeing the three of them together in a picture makes me so nostalgic for the early 2010's. It was an amazing time for pop music, and honestly, it felt like the top charts had far more variety. I do love how rap has evolved since back then, but it's all that ever charts now, and I'm bored of it.

I'd say the real pop trinity of the early 2010s was actually Gaga, Katy and Rihanna. Not Kesha. Kesha never felt like she was dominating at the level those three were at the time even though she had as many huge hits as them during that period.
