And this is coming from someone who likes Lana's music. I mostly like Lana, despite her problematic moments. I do not believe she was entirely off the mark when she remarked that some critics were unfair towards her. For years, some people read into her "retro" vibe as her being racist/conservative/whatever. However, she kind of fed into their assumptions by the way she reacted....and while I don't think her reaction was nearly as bad as the media made it out to be (I feel like she just poorly expressed her point)...it was still insensitive. She basically martyred herself instead of recognizing the industry is rife with sexism and racism. So a handful of progressive music critics made awful assumptions about her? The whole right wing media has been after Bey in an extremely racist and sexist manner for years. Miley and Gaga were sl*t shamed by even mainstream outlets. I get that it must be frustrating for her to have people put words in her mouth, take stuff out of context, or read the worst possible intentions in her words. But there comes a time when you just have to eat it. She should have just apologized and said she was trying to address misogyny in the industry as a whole and then let it go.... Nowhere did she say that she'll be challenging cultural appropriation on the new record. Complex yet again is being messy by twisting Lana's words in to something they're not.
