Well I don't know how italians handle inmigration and how they are perceived both in italy and in the US, and how much of their original customs and traditions mantain or lose. Media in NY have shown italian-americans quite a lot but there's nothing like first-hand experience. Which I know nothing about

Even if Gaga is the 3rd generation of inmigrants, she can still be in touch with her italian culture or not really, it's a very personal experience by your choice or by your family

I remember someone did a DNA thread about pop girls on here and it turns out Ariana is more Italian than Gaga :air:

Gaga:

"75% Italian

25% French-Canadian, English, Scottish, German, French, Swedish, Irish, Dutch"

Ariana:

"100% Italian"

She's American and from Italian descent. My gran is German but I don’t consider myself German... I mean, its each to their own how they identify.

We know that Gaga was really close with her granddad, so maybe she feels more of a connection to her grandparents rather than her American born and bred father. She's American who has descended from Italian/Europeans. Her heritage is Italian, and her nationality is American

I guess looking back at where parents, grandparents etc were born rather than a DNA test

Gaga is 3/4  Italian descent.  Joe is of Italian descent, Cynthia is half Italian descent.

Ariana Grande is 100% Italian descent, and I believe Madonna is also.

It's funny that Gaga is the mpg who kept saying "I'm Italian" in interviews, while Ariana and Madonna are actually more "Italian" than Gaga.

She is Italian ethnicity-wise. Americans have a very different perception of identity but in Europe you can be your own identity regardless of where you live or for how long. In Italy there are Albanians that lived there from hundreds of years and still call and considers themselves Albanians (just an exemple, there are more). I think this is something that Americans need to understand, among other things. :poot:

I mean would she just be called Italian American?

ariana has said before that she’s Italian American:

Grande is of Italian descent, and has described herself as being an Italian American with Sicilian and Abruzzese roots.

She’s Italian-American but lots of people drop off the “-American” part when describing their ethnicity.

Like I’m Mexican-American (3rd gen just like Gaga ) but I have referred to myself as Mexican before. I have noticed this is more common with people who’s families have not been here for several generations, we feel more connected to our roots.

But it's the same way in America.  It is very common for Americans to identify with the country of origin of their ancestors.  Americans are proud to be Americans, but are also proud of their ancestral identity.  An American may say "I'm Irish" even though their Irish ancestors arrived in America in 1750.  Still Irish, and of course, American.

I have a theory why Gaga said "I'm Italian" in nearly every interview during her first 2 or 3 years.  She is proud of her Italian ancestry, and because the word "German" is in her family name she didn't want some fans to assume she was of German descent.  Just a guess on my part.
