Alaska on Tuesday became the first state in the nation to make COVID-19 vaccinations available to anyone over the age of 16 who lives or works in the state.

Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy called the vaccination expansion a "game changer." He said eligibility requirements for the vaccinations are dropped, effective immediately.

"A healthy community means a healthy economy," Dunleavy said. "With widespread vaccinations available to all Alaskans who live or work here, we will no doubt see our economy grow and our businesses thrive."

The Pfizer vaccine is available to people who are 16 and older, while the Johnson & Johnson and Moderna vaccines are available to people 18 and older. All three shots have shown to be effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization, and death due to COVID-19.

fantastic, progress is really happening quickly. Hold tight everyone...they're doing over a million shots a day. You'll get yours soon enough.

They need to start doing this everywhere.

There are parts in my state in rural areas where there are excess vaccines because all the uneducated conservatives aren’t getting it. Send them to the cities and vaccinate anyone.

Most older people are vaccinated now anyway. It’s time to open it to everyone.

The age groups eligibility is stupid, they need to go by red zones, then to just open to everybody.

It's slow and makes no sense to let only the old people get it.

I mean yeah there's not even 1million people who live in Alaska. Smaller states have the luxury to include more people. "They need to start doing this everywhere" yeah but let's consider demographics here first.

Older aged citizens are more vulnerable to Covid when it comes to dealing with systems and recovery. It absolutely made sense to have an age cap at the start. Not sure where you are living but many USA states are lowering the age requirement in phases. Here in Indiana it's now 50 and older.

The point of rolling out vaccines for the elderly and the people at high risk first is to control the hospitalization rate and provide some relief for the ICUs. The elderly are particularly prone to hospitalization and severe symptoms. If the hospitals are overflowing with patients then death rates will automatically increase too. By giving the vaccine to the most vulnerable first, death rates decrease and people who can recover will actually find a place in the hospitals and receive the treatment they need. That's the point of priorities.

Yeah i understand the frustration, I'm part of phase 2 cause I'm asthmatic af and I still have months to wait cause the process is so f*cking slow in my country. I think if distribution and vaccination were faster, the prioritization thing wouldn't have made things so slow

assuming you're in the US, everyone should be able to schedule an appointment by May. That doesn't mean you wont still have to wait, but I think you could realistically get it before August. They're manufacturing enough for every American by May if they keep up the pace thanks to some manufacturing deals.

Lion Heart

If you work in a grocery store or some related business, some states in America now allow you to schedule and get your vaccine.
