I disagree that there isn't a legitimate comparison to be made.

You can be a highly philanthropic, queer, talented, trailblazer, who publicly preaches the value of kindness, while also being the multi-millionaire head of company which profits off of an unethical and toxic work place environment. That is true of Ellen. It is true of Gaga. If you don't think it is, then you should look up Amazon's history of unethical behavior, particularly around the time that Haus Labs launched.

Our icons, like all of us, are capable of being messy and hypocritical. That doesn't make them bad people. It doesn't make them worthy of the kind of petulant nastiness which is directed at Ellen by certain users on this site. You can hold public figures to account without loosing site of their humanity.

If you don't take my word for it, take Gaga's. #PromoteOnlineKindess

The difference here is association (Gaga working with Amazon) and Ellen actually being the one to create and foster an unhealthy working environment that is well-documented, with many people calling her out for her callousness and cruelty. She has even been accused of getting an autistic man fired and it is verified that she complained about a worker at a restaurant having chipped nail polish and almost getting said waitress fired. Let’s not compare the two.

Okay what you are completely missing, Ellen is not facing this hate storm for being part of a toxic environment, she is the direct and active cause of it, by herself, personally.

Haus Labs has a partnership with Amazon, yes there is unfortunate business with them behind the scenes, how many of us use it, if we are not boycotting the site I dont see why Haus Labs needs to.

So no, I see no link at all. I am not saying all of this hate to Ellen is needed even if the reason is just, but she is in NO way comparable to Gaga

Of course the situations are not identical, however there are undeniable similarities. While publicly espousing the values of kindness, behind the scenes they profit off of toxic work environments. For Ellen, it is a pattern of personal unkindness. For Gaga it is choosing to work with companies which, at best, have a well-documented history of fostering an unhealthy work place environment.

My point really was that the comments directed at Ellen by users are over the top and hypocritical. We should be able to hold public figures accountable without being nasty. I'm sure you agree

I disagree. The situations may not be identical, but I think they are comparable. Both are the result of personal decisions.

The public is fickle. Gaga currently carries favor, while Ellen doesn't. That is why Gaga's partnership with a company which has a notoriously unethical and hostile work environment is not being scrutinized. Similarly, when Michelle Obama talks about her friendship with George Bush no one cares, but when Ellen does the same thing she is crucified.

There are legitimate criticism to be made when it comes to Ellen, but the obvious reason users on this site feel comfortable being cruel to her, is simply because they know the hateful bandwagon is on their side.

I feel bad for her, being famous is so complicated and hard. Good job on crucyfing her. She was canceled faster than R. Kelly and Michael Jackson.

For doing the bare minimun.

Literally, they expect her to allow anybody into her personal space, they expect her to be a saint, they expect her to take responsibility for the actions of other people; She does and it's not enough they want to see her burn. People on these Ellen threads disgust me. They act like she would spit on her workers, physically abuse them and then give them hush money. Its like they expect people to not grow from their experiences. They literally want her to bury herself away from society so they can be satisfied. Truly disgusting expectations.

Can we cancel Portia for her involvement in seasons 4 and 5 of Arrested Development?

In the end, they're mostly all rich celebrities getting richer. All should be held accountable, especially when they use their platform to preach kindness.

Ellen and Gaga have no link, so you mean every single music artist then, or Gaga personally?

I just find it so strange you think one of the most hated woman in America is in any way like Gaga, but you do you! Ellen bullies people - Gaga has a company that partners with a site we all use to sell her products, thats the same...

Is she really going to have a complete flop business because she refuses to sell it on a website that we all use, just so can be looked at as 'un-ellen like' to you. I used to work for Amazon at uni, its not a concentration camp for crying out loud

They are not even close to being identical. Celebrities being attached to brands with questionable histories or practices is a dime a dozen nowadays and just a feature of late stage capitalism at this point. For Ellen, it is a pattern of poor behavior that has been empirically verified and is only recently being called out. I don't think most people in this thread have been nasty towards Ellen, definitely not anything worse than what she has done to others.

The public is fickle, but up until recently the public has been unaware of Ellen's behavior. Gaga's relationship with Amazon is something I don't personally like, but let's not act like Gaga is the new Jeff Bezos for doing a brand partnership. The reason the public turned on Ellen is because of her own behavior. Humiliating guests, being rude, creating an unprofessional environment and her alleged mistreatment of Portia. I may be in different circles, but I personally do see many people criticizing Michelle Obama for befriending George W. Bush. The backlash towards Ellen was definitely amplified though because she is a lesbian and Bush was most certainly one of the most homophobic presidents in modern times. Ellen wants to have it both ways, and we are not letting her.

I disagree entirely. So I guess we'll have to leave it at that. :)
