Definitely reminds me of the ppl in my village in Portugal as well as my grandparents village too It wasnt insanely rural because there were cities a short drive away and all the conviniences of modern life... But ppl largely still mantained that sense of community... However i can see its dying. The last couple times i visited Portugal i noticed those attributes of the older rural culture that i loved so much were clearly in decline vs when i lived there I still saw a closer connection and sense of community than i see here in the city in Canada where i live but definitely not as much as before On a related note i find it annoying when Canada has this reputation for being super friendly and great human beings. Like we may not be in political turnoil or having violent protests like in some Countries but were an extremely disconnected culture. A lot of ppl dont even know who their neighbour is 2 houses down much less get involved with community. In the first neighborhood where I lived people knew each other at least eight houses away. In the more recent communities where I lived, the eight was reduced to two or three houses away. Perhaps people became more distant over time. I'll relate one example of the sense of community in the region of Slovakia where my ancestors lived. From years of research I knew that my great-grandfather named Guzanič was from the Carpatho-Rusyn village Pčoliné. When driving through that village my wife and I asked a man outside if any Guzanič lived there. He said no family by that name ever lived in Pčoliné. Later he found us in the town office looking through books of old property records. He told us to follow us to a house. When a lady came to the door he apologized profusely to her for momentarily forgetting that her great-great-grandfather was a Guzanič. Imagine knowing the other people in town so well that you know the family names of their great-great-grandparents. Even a law against selling guns can at least stop new ppl from acquiring them. I get that gun culture is strong but does that mean nothing will change?
