Will Gaga's work ever provide commentary again?

Maybe you've lost interest in Gaga.

Alice provides commentary on what its like to be going through a mental illness attack but wanting to keep looking for glory

Rain On Me is a battle with addiction, and saying a big fck you to all the problems she faces because she's tough enough to walk through the storm.

Free Woman is commentary on her acknowledging her self-worth after her sexual assault

Fun Tonight is commentary on how objectification effects her when trying to have a good time. The whole irony of the lyrics compared to the song title isn't just for show

911 is commentary on what its like to take medication, this idea of radically accepting a wider issue and trying to move forward.

Plastic Doll is objectification by the music industry

Replay is literally a whole commentary on what its like to have PTSD and other mental health issues

Sine From Above is commentary on her rediscovering her love and passion for music

Babylon is commentary on her giving the middle finger to all the gossip and all the hate she received

The whole album (start to finish) is commentary about her journey post-Joanne and after her deep depression and finding solace in music and herself again. The cinematic feeling brings that to life. Its Gaga's most personal, most honest, most authentic album to date. Its split up into 3 sections for a reason, and its not just for cohesiveness

amen, sis :applause:

Chromatica is through and through "commentary" lol

mmmy name ~isn't~ aliceee

Like everyone else here has said: Her art hasn’t stopped doing “commentary” on topics. You can’t go back to something that you never left  :bear:

She will always be the same Gaga at heart from day 1, she's just grown and has a very different life to the one she had those years ago and been through a lot. But it is good to be okay with knowing she (nor any artist) can ever be who they were 10 years ago even if they tried, some actually do try and it is always quite sad to see, its all about growth! :)

At least in this current time, I can see her commentary become a lot more personal as she gets older. Marriage, possible children, etc

When ppl on here pop off about how Gaga's "changed",  all of the above are things we need to remember.

All artists/people get more introspective as they/we get older.

@OMonster I think you are overthinking the wrong thing. The albums you mentioned do have broad appeal but the introspection, akin to Chromatica's depth, was always there. It may be that you have learned how to "see" the deeply personal introspective side of Gaga's work first;, whereas before(when we're younger) we dance to the beat not realizing the depth and meaning of her music until researching it.

Responding to all the comments...

I think commentary was the wrong word. I have misrepresented my point.

I wasn't dragging Gaga's work or saying it lacked 'commentary' in the sense of lacking in theme or meaning. I made that clear in OP when referencing Joanne and Chromatica. Of course all of Gaga's albums have meaning.

My point was that her recent work hasn't provided commentary in a performative way.

For example:

- Bleeding at the VMAs = the toxic side of fame and culture

- The meat dress = human rights

- Joe Calderone =  bending gender norms

- The BTW album shoot = the idea of creating a more equal race

- The Applause MV = how pop music can be artistic

These moments each communicate a point and wider message via performance art.

We have lacked that kind of performative commentary in sometime.

Chromatica provided commentary on mental health, I understand that. But it didn't provide that comment in a performative way - beyond just being a song/album.

I don't know if that makes more sense or not.

And also there's no way anyone can say she will provide commentary via performance art in the future or not. I just thought it was an interesting debate/conversation to have, since it is big performance art moments that have defined Gaga's career in the past.

Chromatica Island

She did the Spotify commentary for Chromatica, so Chromatica does have commentary.

Thank you for clarifying.

I'd say that 2020 really didn't give any artist much of a chance to go as hard as they wanted/planned to. I too have hope for the future but we all just gotta roll with the COVID punches.
