Supersonic 49,376
1 hour ago, PEZ said: Went looking for more about her deleting her Twitter, found this update: https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/movies/2021/02/04/sia-adds-disclaimer-golden-globe-nominated-music-amid-backlash-autism-community/4386251001/ Sia's new film "Music" – which received two Golden Globe nominations on Wednesday – will now include a disclaimer before it starts as backlash from the autism community has mounted against it. The movie features scenes with Maddie Ziegler's autistic character "Music" being restrained as a means to calm her down – something advocates have condemned. "MUSIC in no way condones or recommends the use of restraint on autistic people," the disclaimer will read, according to Variety and The Guardian. "There are autistic occupational therapists that specialize in sensory processing who can be consulted to explain safe ways to provide proprioceptive, deep-pressure feedback to help w meltdown safety." Sia, who has since deleted her Twitter account, apologized and said the scenes will be removed "from all future printings," and that she "listened to the wrong people and that is my responsibility, my research was clearly not thorough enough, not wide enough." At least she admitted that this scene in particular was a dangerous mistake. BUT, that does not change that the movie overall is not a good representation for autistic people. Autistic people are not some "goo goo gah gah" babies that have to their diapers changed for the entirety of their life. Sure, autism CAN be somewhat debilitating, many autistic people classify autism as a disability. And we already have movies like this about autism, there's nothing new or special about the movie. Like... Sia admitted it herself when she said "It's like Rain Man, but with girls!" Additionally, the neurodivergence that Maddie Ziegler performs in the beauty is actually more common in male autistic people, than it is in women. It's not very well researched about the actual realities of autistic people and after all... this was not intended to be a parody or a mockery of autistic people. But the way Sia initially barked back at actual autistic people being concerned about the movie and her refusal to listen to the people she wanted to "represent" did make it seem like she's making a mockery of it. You can't claim to wanna positively represent a marginalized group when a. you're not part of the group b. you don't consult with people of the group c. you don't give anybody from said group a chance to use your platform d. you attack people of the group for questioning your methods e. you spread misinformation about that group This entire ordeal really made the movie seem like an "inspiration p0rn" meme on Facebook in 2012, where people would make up stories about disabled people with incredibly melodramatic sob stories to elicit likes, shares, sympathy and 15 minutes of fame. I can certainly say that I am not part of a stigma and 100% support anybody who expresses themselves in any way they want. You're completely missing my point and it's rich that you would say that I'm part of a stigma you're defending a straight male playing a gay part. My whole point is that a straight men is playing a gay part and getting praised for it when there are plenty of gay actors to play the part, but go defending straight people for whatever reason and mixing my words a long the way. gag 22,449
Sia deleting her Twitter right after an apology seems... counterproductive and performative. How is she apologetic if that apology can’t be found anywhere? This whole ordeal has been nothing but a mess. It’s so frustrating that it was so easily avoidable too, if only she did more legitimate research and actually listened to the community she claimed to champion. headspin, happiness, DE̤̣A̢̯͔̘T͏͙̗̟̫H̗̙͡ͅ

James Corden does not play the part of a gay man. You are making the assumption that because Corden acts very enthusiastic (almost flamboyant at times) that it must mean that he is acting "gay." He is not gay, so why even make the connection? This re-asserts the harmful stereotype that gay men are flamboyant and enthusiastic. You are making the assumption which is the stereotype. Lmao, it even says that in the series he plays a gay part and plays the "stereotype" so the script was written and he played what he thinks is a typical gay person which imo is harmful because in someways he's making a mockery and can get away with it cause he's straight but anyways...
