Sia's "Music" Panned by Critics; Receives 2 Golden Globe Noms [Updated]

Sia's first movie "Music", set for general release next February 12th, is being panned by critics (28% on Rotten Tomates), but received 2 nominations for this year's Golden Globes, as recently announced.

Sia's new film "Music" – which received two Golden Globe nominations on Wednesday – will now include a disclaimer before it starts as backlash from the autism community has mounted against it. 

The movie features scenes with Maddie Ziegler's autistic character "Music" being restrained as a means to calm her down – something advocates have condemned.

"MUSIC in no way condones or recommends the use of restraint on autistic people," the disclaimer will read, according to Variety and The Guardian. "There are autistic occupational therapists that specialize in sensory processing who can be consulted to explain safe ways to provide proprioceptive, deep-pressure feedback to help w meltdown safety."

Sia, who has since deleted her Twitter account, apologized and said the scenes will be removed "from all future printings," and that she "listened to the wrong people and that is my responsibility, my research was clearly not thorough enough, not wide enough."

Many of this year's nominations are a joke so I'm not surprised...  Some categories are just cringy  However, we haven't watched the movie yet but if the critics gave it 28%, I'm not really expecting something good, tbh

I'm still disgusted at James corden nomination because 1. The fact he's nominated for anything 2. yet another straight cisgender man getting praised for playing a stereotypical gay man

I literally thought James Corden was gay ever since I first heard of him but a few weeks ago I found out he has a wife  it changed my whole world

Not only that. The movie depicts one of the caregivers of the autistic girl holding her in a prone restraint when she has a physical meltdown. This has been called out by multiple autistic people as harmful and even life-threatening to autistic people. 

At one point, Music experiences a meltdown, and neighbour Ebo rushes in, lying on top of her in an effort to calm her. “I’m crushing her with my love,” Ebo explains as Zu watches on. In reality, the use of prone or supine restraint has killed dozens of children – often ones on the Autism spectrum – and injured many more in US schools, juvenile justice settings and psychiatric facilities. Just last year, autistic boy Eric Parsa died when sheriff’s deputies allegedly placed him in prone restraint, taking turns sitting on him, for nine minutes. Eric’s “crime”: experiencing a meltdown in public.

This movie depicts autistic people as infantile people with absolutely no agency over themselves instead of like... actual humans, along with casually giving out tips on how to accidentally kill them.

I can't believe it. I mean, I don't know much about autism but even I can know that doing that doesn't sound right.

no the percentage is for the number of positive reviews, and there’s only 7 reviews of it on RT right now.

Which is not a good sign at all...good movies usually skyrocket during the initial reviews and then lower their ratings until they finally reach consensus.

I'm excited to watch the movie but didn't expect it to be nominated to be honest. It must be because not a lot of films were released during this cycle due to COVID but still interesting to see that. I just don't see it being nominated for the Academy Awards though.

I haven't seen that but know he's not a good actor. I just don't understand why people are now offended about straight guys playing gay men. Like it's just a movie and they're acting. Neil Patrick Harris is gay and he played a straight character on a sitcom for years and was praised for it. I just don't agree that "only gay men should play gay characters / only transgender people should play transgender characters" type of mentality. And yes I know that this comes back decades of homophobia and transphobia and they're trying to do the right thing being more inclusive today but if they do this then they're just repeating that.

28% on Rotten Tomatoes with like...1 week of screenings. It's implicit
